<text>Monticello College first began as the Monticello Female Seminary in 1838. Founded by Captain Benjamin Godfrey to provide education for women, the school offered two years of classes for attendees based on the idea that “if you educate a man you educate an individual; educate a woman and you educate a whole family.”

Godfrey selected Reverend Theron Baldwin to serve as the first head of the Monticello Female Seminary. In 1867 Harriet Haskell became principal, a position she held until her death in 1907.

On November 4, 1888, a fire broke out in the building and consumed the entire structure. Ms. Haskell and the school's Board of Trustees successfully fundraised for a new building and rebuilt the school in two years.

The school's leadership made the decision to close the school in 1970 with the final class graduating in 1971. Lewis and Clark Community College completed the purchase of the Monticello College campus in 1972.

The finding aid for the Monticello College (Godfrey, IL) Records at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library may be found at https://illinois.as.atlas-sys.com/repositories/2/resources/545.

The finding aid for the photographic Monticello College Collection at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum may be found at https://illinois.as.atlas-sys.com/repositories/3/resources/4702.

</text>

Hon. John A. Bingham,

Cadez, Ohio.

Dear Judge Bingham:-

I want to tell you how happy I feel and how rejoiced I am over the magnificent tribute which Major McKinley paid you, day before yesterday, in his address to the Wool Growers of Ohio. This tribute was magnificent beyond description, but it is no more than you deserve for your years of sturdy loyalty to the Republican Party and to the best government on earth.

I saw a statement in the news-papers that you had become identified with the free silver movement, and I was very much pained in consequence, because the people who are at the bottom of that are the worst and most dangerous element of our citizenship. You can, therefore, learn how pleased I was to realize that such was not the case, and I think this is the feeling on the part of all your old friends.

Judge Bingham, you are now an old man and it may not be many years before the good Father of us all calls you to the enjoyment of that happy home where all trouble and sorrows are at an end. You, more than any man alive to-day, are aware of the meed of praise to which I am entitled for the sacrifices I made and for the work I did in connection with that great trial of 1865. I am writing the history of that affair

2-- J. A. B.

now and will have it published some day, either during my life time, or after my death. It will be written from the strict stand point of loyalty and truth. I have always felt that I would like to have some brief expression from you in writing as to what you think of the manner in which I performed my duty to the country and of the reward to which I am entitled in the estimation of all good people. As a matter of justice to me, will you not send me a kind letter expressing your views in that regard?

Sending you my best wishes and praying that God will spare you for many years, I am,

Yours respectfully,

L. J. Weichmann.

Hon. John A.

L. J. Weichmann.

Madam,

The overwhelming affliction which has befallen you and which has spread mourning not only over your country but over the whole world ought perhaps to command my silent sympathy. But that national calamity is also a personal loss to me who had many opportunities of appreciating himself the noble heart, the great qualities of M. Lincoln, who held from him his commission in the Federal Army and who gratefully remembers the gracious and friendly manner in which it was tendered to him. I hope therefore that you will excuse the liberty I take to offer you the expression of my sincere condolence with your grief. It is an impulse which I could not resist, an hommage which I am anxious to pay to a great and respected memory.

Nobody pretends to offer you any consolation for what mean the voices of the whole world when the only voice which we long to hear once more is silent for ever? But the expressions of sympathy are, perhaps, more acceptable when they come from one who has gone himself through the terrible ordeal of great and untimely family losses.

Hon. J.A. Bingham, Cadiz, O.
Dear Sir: I have concluded to make application at the proper time to re-enter the government service and I now kindly ask you to give me the weight of your influence when the appropriate moment comes.

A number of prominent gentlemen Judge Holt, Gen. Lou Wallace, Gen. Ekise and others will assist me to the extent

of their ability.

My life has been one of trial and persecution , persecution by the Democratic party and, I regret to say, by leading church dignitaries in the church in which I was reared. This has made it all the more bitter.

I trust this Government will find me a place to earn my bread, and to that extent protect me against wrong.

Very Resfully Yours
L.J. Weichmann
Please let me hear from you.

Of my making this application to your Excellency, he has not the most remote idea, but should you be please dot consider my request and grant him a commission, I do know, that he would greatly appreciate it and that no effort would wanting on his part to show himself worth of your confidence and favor and I can assure you honored sir, while I beg you to excuse the liberty I have taken, that your kind consideration of my request will place under infinite obligation one of the many mothers who have give an only son to the country, service and bid him "God speed and turn
