Springfield

Dear Sir

I have just returned from a Conference Meeting of a few of our friends and find that our folks are enthusiastic in preparing to receive you

After we left you yesterday, met Bateman and incidentally learned from him, that he was as much interested in the appointment of our mutual friend [M.?] as we were, and that he had done something to aid him. I told him that we had just seen you, and had secured your co-operation unless Mr C. should apply, which would make it more difficult to determine. My object in writing this is to tell you, what will doubtless be very gratifying to you, that Mr C. does not want it but, does want another place, and M Bateman authorizes met say that Mr C. will aid our friend M., with pleasure If it were not that you have been so much occupied as well as somewhat nearly harassed with your own matters, it would be strange how you could have forgotten N. but under the circumstances your forgetfulness is not remarkable but the first name on Mr C.s paper is your own

over

I feel very much gratified that the matter now stands as it does, and am also pleased to have it in such a condition as not to place you in an embarassing position by your being compelled to choose between two persons

It is also pleasant to succeed when we undertake to do something for our friends.

Trusting that you will be in good time and that we shall have a pleasant time when you come home

I am Yours Truly

M. P. Ayers

Springfield

M. P. Ayers

New York Aug. 15. 1864.

His Excellency Govr. Yates

Springfield Ill.

Governor---Permit me, a former resident of Chicago, to address you on a subject which may prove of benefit to your State. From the newspapers I learned a few days ago, that you have appointed a Committee to consider the Disposition that should be made of some 48,000 Acres of land your State recently got from Congress, and as there is a possibility of the State locating and taking possession of those lands instead of selling the mere right to locate and take possession of them, I beg leave to draw your attention to the fact that Gustav Struve, the Co-patriot and intimate of Friedrich Hecker has recently established at Coburg in Saxony an office for the sale of lands in the United States. Mr. Struve like friend Hecker esteemed and revered in all Germany, has spent here some 12 years, two of which as a volunteer in the 8th NY. V., and has returned to Europe about a year ago. On account of his well known and well tried honesty, he is just the man to carry on such operations in Europe beneficially to all the parties concerned. Should these 48,000 Acres be first located and then placed at the disposal of Mr. Struve, I have no doubt that

that your State would reap the full benefit therefrom, and that a new and thriving German settlement would soon cover those lands. Mr. Struve has associated with him a man of a similar lofty character Mr. Feodor Streit of Coburg, and as to the character of Struve any prominent German in Ill. can give you the necessary information. Their firm is I believe: Struve & Streit in Coburg, Saxony, and they intend getting low-priced US lands placed at their disposal and sell them for a small commission; the buyer to pay them a small portion of the purchase money, and paying the balance on taking possession of the land and receiving his deed.

As for myself I beg leave to refer you to Judge E. S. Williams and Hon John L. Wilson of Chicago

Where is Col. Hecker and what has become of him? About a year ago I saw him wounded at the house of his brother-in-law Dr. Tiedeman in Philadelphia, and since that time, on account of my absence in Europe I lost sight of him.

I have the honor to be,

Governor

Your

most humble servt.

M. Pinner

P.S. By next Saturday's steamer I'll write to Mr. Struve. Should you honor me with a reply until then, I could transmit its substance.

Pinner. M.

New York.

Aug 16th 1864

Calls the Governor's attention to the fact that Gustav Struve, an intimate friend of Friedrick Hecker, has with Mr. Feodor Streit established in Coburg Saxony an office for the sale of lands in U.S. Suggests that the 48,000 acres of Illinois lands recently submitted to committee for disposition should placed in hands of Mr. Struve.

Struve.

Dr Sir & Friend,

I write requesting a favor of you, if you can consistently render it. The case is this: John C. Ham, son of Wm & Mary Ham, a young boy, nineteen years old, a noble soldier member of Co. D. 50th Reg. Ills. [Vet.?] Vol. was severely wounded, in the gallant defense of Allatoona Ga. on the 5th day of October 1864, and is now in Ward E., Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis Mo.

It is his desire that he should be transferred to one of the Hospitals in Quincy Ills. Being young and inexperienced

I have no doubt such removal would be of great benefit to him. There are three brothers of theirs in the service, and the parents feel that you are a true friend to the soldier and therefore you sympathize with them in their sacrifices for Liberty and Union. Hence they feel their appeal will not be in vain.

We are taught to minister to the relief of the distressed in every condition of life. Let us there for as brothers in one common family do our utmost to alleviate the sufferings of humanity especially our noble soldiers. If you could possibly procure the transfer asked, you would oblige a true friend and supporter.

Yours fraternally

M. R. Butz

M. R. Butz

Butz M. R.

Liberty Dec. 16/64

Wants John Ham of 50th Regt promoted

Office of the Daily Union

Rock Island, Ills., Jan 30, 1865

Hon Richard Yates

My dear Sir

I have intended to have written to you long before congratulating you on your election to the United States Senate, but a press of business has prevented me from doing so until the present moment. I am truly gratified that you triumphed over all your enemies. This gladness arises from no personal considerations, but on another and nobler one of justice to a worthy public officer who has been faithful in many things. I have always claimed that you alone among all the able defenders of our faith in this state are best entitled to the proud distinction of representing the Empire State of the West in the highest Councils of the Nation. I hope your course during the next six years may be a brilliant one and that you will place your name still higher on the roll of fame.

Your election to the Senate is the more gratifying from the fact that you are the soldiers friend; and also the other fact that you have been able to crush out the politicians who were determined to destroy you You were traduced and villified from one end of

the state to the other Many of those who embraced your cause at the start became lukewarm and finally abandoned you altogether when they thought they could gain better positions by so doing, and thus wounded you in the house of your friends.

This was the case in this vicinity I am sorry to say The men who were elected to the Legislature from this Senatorial District and County, were pledged to your cause before the nominations were made; that was the issue, and how basely they betrayed you the sequel will tell. I was a member of the Senatorial Convention that nominated Mr. Webster, and before the nomination was made I was requested to put the question to him if he was nominated and elected if he would vote for you for Senator. He replied unequivocally "I will." The same inquiry was put to Mr Lloyd before his nomination to represent this county in the lower House, and the same reply returned.

The inquiry naturally comes up what was it that induced them to falsify this profession after election made before I will answer: Three days before the meeting of the Legislature Mr Washburn visited Rock Island and a private meeting was called of his friends in one of the Parlors of the Island City. To this meeting the newly elected Senator and Representative were invited I was also invited but did not go. I saw through the game

and could not be made a party to it. The principle figures in this meeting were Judge Wilkinson (who has played two faced) and Mr Miesdale our Post Master, who has always been a Washburn man It was decided that Mr Webster and Mr Lloyd must go for Washburn for Senator because he, Washburn, had done so much for Rock Island in times past, and Dick Yates had done nothing. Washburn had [illegible]ed the bill through Congress to build an arsenal on the island and he would do still larger things for the city if he was Senator. We cant look with these important men and [expectants?] of Legislative honors and they sold a true man for a less price than Judas sold his master, and the only regret is they did not carry out the parallel and go hang themselves as Judas did. Those men proved themselves men of straw, and no doubt today imagine themselves great men because they happen to be bobtails in a Legislative body. Poor jacks they have made their beds in the [illegible] then let them lie for the brief span of their political existence We will take care of them in the future and see that they do not soon have another opportunity to [stick?] our cause by believing their professions and promises.

Friend Yates, looking the ground all over you have much cause to feel proud of the noble stand which your friends have taken in your behalf. I hope

you may live to see the last of your betryers politically damned and buried so deep beneath public contempt that they will have no resurrection. It should do such persons good to be jibbeted at some cross-way where the winds of heaven might fan their carrion carcasses. Such an airing might do them good. I always feel like holding my nose when I come between such persons and the wind.

Now Senator I have a record personal to myself. I have labored for many long years in the cause of Freedom, and never yet held a civil office I never asked for one. In 1854 I joined the Republican party and was honored in 1856 when seat in the Philadelphia Convention that nominated Fremont. I represented the 27th New York Congressional District in the Convention. Since that time I have labored incessantly for the triumph of those principles

I served my country in the Mexican War in the 2nd Illinois Infantry and was wounded at the battle of Buena Vista and at the end of the war honorably discharged. In this great rebellion I served two years and would have been in the service to-day or in heaven but for Gov Gambles Enrolled State Militia, who would not allow me to [illegible] a rank on the head whenever I could find one. [Be let?] the pass.

What I want is the Rock Island Port Offer for the next four years. Will you help me to get it? Dr. Trusdale has had it four years which is long enough. The Department has adopted the plan of giving those appointments to editors in other places and I know no reason why the rule should be varied here.

I am not personally acquainted with Gen Harding. He will have the recommendation. Will you see him for me and fix the matter? I am entitled to the place on the ground of service I have labored hard and spent much money for the present administration I ask for nothing but what is right. The present incumbent is no friend of yours or Gen. Harding.

Excuse this hasty letter I have no time for sentiments. I would like something better but these are too many after places Let me hear from you and believe me

Yours truly & faithfully to the last

<text>Joseph Capps and his sons founded the Jacksonville Woolen Mills in 1839. They began making men’s pants in 1885 and were incorporated as J. Capps & Sons, Ltd. in 1886 as a manufacturer of textiles and men’s clothing. Capps came to Jacksonville from Kentucky where he had learned the trade of wool carding in Louisville. Most farmers had sheep and did carding of the wool and home manufacture of yarns for knitting and weaving. Capps carding plant eliminated this tedious and time consuming process from the farmer’s duties. By 1852 Capps produced and marketed a finished wool cloth and during the Civil War they produced blankets and overcoats.

Joseph died in 1872 and his sons, Stephen, William, Joseph, and Alfred took over the business. In 1885 there were very few men’s clothing stores, but the Capps started making pants and their salesman started selling pants to retail stores instead of cloth. By the 1890’s they were making suits.

Around the turn of the century they started making blankets for the Indians on western reservations which were then sold as Indian blankets. After advertising in Saturday Evening Post, they became popular with the general population but the company quit making blankets in 1915. In 1904 the old buildings were renovated and a new factory was built. The sale of cloth was down but the production and sales of men’s suits grew rapidly.

In the 1920’s the company started buying much of the wool they were using in their suits. During World War II they made “pea coats” and the Navy awarded the company a “Certificate of Achievement”.

Robert Capps, the son of Alfred Capps, had planned to go to medical school but he joined the Army when America entered WWI. When he came back, he went to work for the family business as a salesman in Wisconsin and in 1944 he became the company president.

The original mill closed in 1927 and was torn down several years later. In the 1940’s Capps built a new one story factory. They started a business in 1937, Robert’s Tailoring Company, with Harry Capps as president, but it was unsuccessful and in 1942 it was liquidated.

The company celebrated its 125th anniversary in 1964, with Robert still acting as president. The company was the most long lived manufacturing company in Illinois. Robert died in 1968 and ten years later the company closed.</text>
