Founded by Captain Benjamin Godfrey to provide education for women, the school offered two years of classes for attendees based on the idea that “if you educate a man you educate an individual; educate a woman and you educate a whole family.” Godfrey selected Reverend Theron Baldwin to serve as the first head of the Monticello Female Seminary. In 1867 Harriet Haskell became principal, a position she held until her death in 1907.  On November 4, 1888, a fire broke out in the building and consumed the entire structure. Ms. Haskell and the school's Board of Trustees successfully fundraised for a new building and rebuilt the school in two years. The school's leadership made the decision to close the school in 1970 with the final class graduating in 1971. Lewis and Clark Community College completed the purchase of the Monticello College campus in 1972. Robert, a Presbyterian minister and professor of languages at Transylvania University, married Hannah Todd, the aunt of Mary Todd Lincoln and Elizabeth Edwards. Robert and Hannah's son, John Todd Stuart, came to Illinois in 1828 after studying the law and immediately set up practice in Springfield. He fought in the Black Hawk War as a major in the battalion in which Abraham Lincoln had commanded a company. He served in the House of Representative from 1832-1836 serving with Lincoln. When Lincoln passed the bar, he practiced with Stuart until 1841. Stuart was elected to Congress, in 1838 defeating Stephen A. Douglas. After serving two terms, he went back into practice with Benjamin Edwards, but was then elected to the U.S. Senate in 1848, serving one term from 1848-1852. After being elected to the U.S. House in 1862 and serving one term, he returned to the practice of law with Edwards. In 1858, his son-in-law, Christopher C. Brown joined the firm. John T. Stuart also served as president of the Springfield City Railway Company, president of the Springfield Watch Company, president of the Betty Stuart Board of Trustees and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the National Lincoln Monument Association.  Stuart married Mary Virginia Nash of Jacksonville, Illinois on October 25, 1837. They had seven children: Elizabeth (Bettie), John Todd, Virginia, Frank, Robert, Hannah and Edwards. Bettie married Christopher C. Brown, a lawyer. After John T. Stuart’s death on November 28, 1885, Brown continued the law firm, eventually bringing his son, Stuart, into the practice. John Todd and Mary Virginia's son, John Todd Stuart, married Emily Webster Huntington. Their daughter, Mary Virginia Stuart married George Ketchum Hall and their children included George Stuart, Henry Huntington, and Archibald Stuart. Keller began his working career as a school teacher and principal in Ava, Illinois, before becoming a lawyer and eventually working in the mining industry in the western United States and Mexico. Keller represented southern Illinois as a member of the Illinois State Senate (1913-1917) where he advocated for old-age pensions, woman’s suffrage, pure food and drug laws, and the eight-hour day. He served five terms in the United States House of Representatives (1931-1941). While in Congress, he was a member of the liberal bloc that supported New Deal legislation; introduced railroad retirement pension legislation; sought relief aid for Southern Illinois and envisioned Crab Orchard Lake project on a grand scale. He unsuccessfully campaigned for re-election in ever election between 1940-1948 with the exception of 1946 when he was in Mexico as a special adviser to the United States Ambassador. Kent E. Title A name given to the resource Orendorff Family Collection Subject The topic of the resource Families Orendorff, Christian Orendorff, William J., 1829-1897 Orendorff, Alfred, 1845-1909 Description An account of the resource The Orendorff Family Collection follows the descendents of pre-Revolutionary war German immigrant, Christian Orendorff.  Christian Orendorff, a German immigrant, fought in the Revolutionary War as a Captain in the First Regiment, Maryland Continental Line.  Alfred (1845-1909), the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Orendorff, married Julia Williams (1850-1908) in June 1870 and had three children: John born 1871, Alice born 1872, and Lydia Edna born 1885. Alfred was an associate with Herndon and Zane and later a partner in Herndon and Orendorff.  He won election to the Illinois General Assembly in 1873.  He served as Chairman of the State Central Committee of the Democratic Party and was a frequent delegate to the national convention.  He was president of the Sterling Life Insurance Company of Springfield, president of the International Bank and Trust Co. of Vinita, Indian Territory; president of the Sangamon County Bar Association and the Illinois State Bar Association; and a director of the Illinois State Historical Society.   Alfred's son John married Maebelle Culver in 1903, and was the secretary of the Bank and Trust Company of Tishomingo, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, and worked at the Tishomingo Electric Light and Power Company.  Alice never married but was involved with the Orendorff Place Improvements Association and secretary for the Women’s Auxiliary of the First Presbyterian Church.  Edna worked at the Illinois State Historical Library as an assistant doing genealogical research.  She married John Francis Macpherson in 1911 and they had two children, Julia born in 1913 and John Francis born in 1916.   W. J. Orendorff (1829-1897) was the son of John and Margaret Sayle Orendorff who came to Illinois in 1818 and settled near what is now Canton.  In 1850 W. J. went into partnership with his sister Caroline’s husband, William Parlin, manufacturing and selling plows.  In 1856 W. J. married Mary Rohrer and they had four children.  He represented his district, as a Republican, in the General Assembly from 1884 to 1886.  W.J. wrote a book of family history and attempted to get it published.  W. J. died in 1897 as a result of an accident with a team of runaway horses.  Ulysses Grant Orendorff (1865-1943), his son, became the Secretary Treasurer of Parlin & Orendorff and remained with the company until it was bought by International Harvester in 1918. Davis (Democrat) served in the Illinois House of Representatives from 1943 through 1978. He represented the First District from 1943-1956, the Twentieth District from 1957-1964, the Twenty-second District from 1967-1978, and as an At-large Representative from 1965-1966. Known as “Deacon” because of his pulpit-style oratory, Davis fought for civil and women’s rights, fair employment practices, and the care and protection of children. Brown (ca. 1828-1862) married Sarah A. Barnett in Illinois on November 19, 1857. The couple had two sons, John (b. October 29, 1859) and William L. “Linky” (b. February 21, 1861). Brown was a Hickory Creek, Illinois, farmer when he enlisted as a corporal in Company B, 40th Illinois Infantry in August 1861. He died in Memphis, Tennessee, of chronic dysentery on August 7, 1862. Sarah died on July 30, 1863 and had two brothers who also fought in the Civil War: John T. Barnett (97th Illinois Infantry) and William S. Barnett (40th Illinois Infantry). Title A name given to the resource Henry Horner Collection Description An account of the resource Governor Henry Horner (1933-1940) was elected in 1932 and reelected in 1936; however, he died in office during the third year of his second term. Horner was committed to cleaning up corruption in the Chicago-run Democratic Party machine. An expert on Abraham Lincoln, Horner was an avid collector of Lincoln artifacts and papers. His huge collection of Lincolniana became the foundation of the Illinois State Historical Library and its successor institution, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library. Governor Horner also holds the honor of being Illinois's first Jewish governor. Items in this collection include portraits of Governor Horner, images from President Franklin D.
