The ACI grew out of the merger of the Springfield Chamber of Commerce, Springfield Manufacturers and Employers Association, and the Springfield Industrial Development Commission. During the 1950s, the association mainly focused on improving the city sewer system, completed plans for the creation of three industrial parks, and worked for a comprehensive zoning plan. However, with the growth of the Springfield area in the 1960s, the local economy became a concern of the entire Springfield metropolitan area, not just the city of Springfield, so the ACI changed its name to the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce in December 1970. The new Chamber of Commerce continued the ACI’s efforts to promote and improve the Springfield community in the 1970s, focusing primarily on developing the city’s convention and tourism trade. The collection includes photographs relating to Springfield’s first Business-Education (B-E) Day on October 10, 1952, which was sponsored by the Springfield Association of Commerce and Industry. One-hundred public and parochial teachers from city and county schools participated in the program, visiting local industries, such as Springfield Works. This collection also has photographs from Springfield’s 1957 “Capitennial” celebration and other events sponsored by the ACI, ranging from the 1920s to the 1960s. The collection also includes images of Dollar Day in downtown Springfield, the annual Plae Dae picnic, Springfield Day festivities at the Illinois State Fair, and Springfield's Capitennial celebration. In December 1932 a large methane gas explosion in the Moweaqua coal mine killed fifty-four miners. The accident led to the passage of new federal mining safety legislation which phased out the use of carbide miner's lanterns in coal mines. Reimer and Sarah Kohlsaat were abolitionists whose home was reportedly a station on the Underground Railroad. The Kohlsaat family moved to Galena, Illinois, in 1854 until moving to Chicago in 1865. He became a travelling salesman, eventually working for Blake, Shaw and Company, a wholesale bakery owned by R. Nelson Blake, who was to become Kohlsaat’s father-in-law. In 1880 Kohlsaat married Mabel E. Blake and became a junior partner of Blake, Shaw and Company in charge of a bakery-lunch establishment in the city. In 1883 he brought out Blake, Shaw and Company’s interest in the establishment and started H.H. Kohlsaat and Company, which for about thirty years was one of the largest baking establishments in Chicago. He opened several lunch stores which drew a good patronage from the businessmen of the Loop district. In 1888 Kohlsaat was an alternate delegate at the Republican national convention held in Chicago. He became an early supporter of William McKinley, then Governor of Ohio, working for his nomination and election to the presidency in 1896. Kohlsaat was a friend, confidant and advisor of five United States Presidents: McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, Taft, Wilson, and Harding.  In 1891, Kohlsaat purchased a half-interest in the Chicago newspaper Inter-Ocean. In 1894 Kohlsaat abandoned his interest in the Inter-Ocean, and purchased the Chicago Times-Herald and the Evening Post. He converted the papers from Democratic to independent Republican organs. His influence in the Republican Party helped draft the gold-standards plank during the 1896 convention in St. Louis. McKinley’s ensuing campaign for the presidency against free silverite William Jennings Bryan was ultimately won on the gold standard issues.  In 1901 Kohlsaat purchased the Chicago Record from Victor F. Lawson and combined it with the Times-Herald, naming the new paper the Record-Herald. Kohlsaat resigned the editorship of the Record-Herald for a time to devote himself to his real estate interests, but later regained control in 1910. He remained editor of the Record-Herald for two years, and then he returned to edit the Inter-Ocean. Kohlsaat left the Inter-Ocean after a year and became a member of the staff of New York Times. Kohlsaat died October 17, 1924, in Washington, D.C., at the home of Herbert Hoover. Robert, a Presbyterian minister and professor of languages at Transylvania University, married Hannah Todd, the aunt of Mary Todd Lincoln and Elizabeth Edwards. Robert and Hannah's son, John Todd Stuart, came to Illinois in 1828 after studying the law and immediately set up practice in Springfield. He fought in the Black Hawk War as a major in the battalion in which Abraham Lincoln had commanded a company. He served in the House of Representative from 1832-1836 serving with Lincoln. When Lincoln passed the bar, he practiced with Stuart until 1841. Stuart was elected to Congress, in 1838 defeating Stephen A. Douglas. After serving two terms, he went back into practice with Benjamin Edwards, but was then elected to the U.S. Senate in 1848, serving one term from 1848-1852. After being elected to the U.S. House in 1862 and serving one term, he returned to the practice of law with Edwards. In 1858, his son-in-law, Christopher C. Brown joined the firm. John T. Stuart also served as president of the Springfield City Railway Company, president of the Springfield Watch Company, president of the Betty Stuart Board of Trustees and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the National Lincoln Monument Association.  Stuart married Mary Virginia Nash of Jacksonville, Illinois on October 25, 1837. They had seven children: Elizabeth (Bettie), John Todd, Virginia, Frank, Robert, Hannah and Edwards. Bettie married Christopher C. Brown, a lawyer. After John T. Stuart’s death on November 28, 1885, Brown continued the law firm, eventually bringing his son, Stuart, into the practice. John Todd and Mary Virginia's son, John Todd Stuart, married Emily Webster Huntington. Their daughter, Mary Virginia Stuart married George Ketchum Hall and their children included George Stuart, Henry Huntington, and Archibald Stuart. Vernon, 1894-1972 Description An account of the resource The Janotta Family Collection contains photographs relating to conductor/composer Alfredo Jannotta, his wife, activist and author Stella Skiff Jannotta, and their family. Several photographs belonged to their son, Navy Rear Admiral A. Vernon Jannotta. Alfredo Jannotta immigrated from Italy by way of London to Boston in 1865 where he taught voice at the New England Conservatory of Music. He married his first wife, Alice Prudy and they had a son, Edward, before Alfredo moved to Cincinnati in 1868. Alfredo spent 12 years in Cincinnati teaching vocal performance as well as conducting the Cincinnati Choral Society and organizing the first Cincinnati orchestra. He moved back to Boston in 1881 but moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1882 and finally to Chicago in 1888 where he established himself as a vocal teacher. While teaching in Chicago, Jannotta taught vocal lessons to Stella Skiff whom he married in 1893. Skiff was the daughter of Iowa businessman Vernon William Skiff and his wife, Mary Frances Coffin. Her brother, Frank Vernon Skiff founded the Jewel Tea Company which later grew into a national grocery store chain including Jewel, Osco, Eisner, and White Hen. Skiff continued her singing career after marrying Jannotta and briefly taught lessons. Between 1894 and 1898, she gave birth to sons A. Vernon, Francis, and Joseph. Between 1917 and 1918, Stella adopted three foster daughters, Margaret, Marion, and Betty (Elizabeth). In the early 20th century she began taking an active interest in causes including the suffrage movement and socialism. Stella Jannotta joined the Chicago Political Equality League (predecessor to the Chicago League of Women Voters) in 1907. She wrote for the propaganda arm of the organization, including a 1916 article entitled "Public Opinion" which she revisted several times over the following decades. A. Vernon Jannotta, the oldest son on Alfredo and Stella, served in the United States Navy in both World War I and World War II. He rose through the ranks of the Navy and the Naval Reserves, eventually retiring as a Rear Admiral in 1954. Jannotta received several military honors including the Navy Cross, Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and a Purple Heart.  Jannotta began working at the Jewel Tea Company in 1919 and held several positions at the company for the next 50 years. He also held several executive positions or held stakes in several companies including Lehman Brothers, Motor Institute of America, Tapp, Inc. and Consolidated Trading Corporation. Plumley and he is a member of the 94th Regiment Ill Vols he was at the Siege of Vicksburg and while there was [illegible] and had a severe attack of intermitting fever and when the Regiment was at Port Hudson he was so bad they sent him up the river to Jefferson Barracks where he was for nearly 2 months until last week he was transferred to the hospital at Quincy Illinois while he was at the Barrack he was promised a furlough but did not get it and now at Quincy they tell him there is no such thing as furlough there that as soon as they get ready they send them to the Invalid Corps. I know it is through your efforts that the Illinois Troops have been transferred to their own states and that is your desire to make them as comfortable as the circumstances will admit but it does look hard to put a man in the hospital and tell him he can't go out on any conditions whatever. in all probability you are not aware <hr /> that such a thing is in existence and will do something to remedy it I have no doubt if he could get home for a couple of months he would be fit for service again but if he is kept in the hospital I am afraid he will not live long for he is so anxious to get home it preys on his mind and keeps him back I know a few words from you would set the matter right and I think I can venture to say save the life of a man that is very dear to his family and may yet do some good for his country and releive an anxious wife, hoping you will excuse the liberty I have taken and grant my request. Plumley and he is a member of the 94th Regiment Ill Vols he was at the Siege of Vicksburg and while there was [illegible] and had a severe attack of intermitting fever and when the Regiment was at Port Hudson he was so bad they sent him up the river to Jefferson Barracks where he was for nearly 2 months until last week he was transferred to the hospital at Quincy Illinois while he was at the Barrack he was promised a furlough but did not get it and now at Quincy they tell him there is no such thing as furlough there that as soon as they get ready they send them to the Invalid Corps. I know it is through your efforts that the Illinois Troops have been transferred to their own states and that is your desire to make them as comfortable as the circumstances will admit but it does look hard to put a man in the hospital and tell him he can't go out on any conditions whatever. in all probability you are not aware <hr /> that such a thing is in existence and will do something to remedy it I have no doubt if he could get home for a couple of months he would be fit for service again but if he is kept in the hospital I am afraid he will not live long for he is so anxious to get home it preys on his mind and keeps him back I know a few words from you would set the matter right and I think I can venture to say save the life of a man that is very dear to his family and may yet do some good for his country and releive an anxious wife, hoping you will excuse the liberty I have taken and grant my request.
