liberty of transmitting to you a

statement of facts which need

legal investigations by competent authority.

If ever there was an

aggravating injury to an innocent

female, that case is my own -

And it can be proved, clearly,

and conclusively.

I entreat you to place

this statement in the hand

of the State's Attorney with

full instructions for him

to investigate the charges

as soon as pofsible. You

will doubtlefs enquire why

I do not have my Brother,

William C. Gondy, attend

to this businefs for me.

When I fled from Taylorville

I came to my Brother with

my complaint, but he at once

interdicted my making it

public - therefore, is this long

to the States Attorney. Indeed,

this is mine only resort for

obtaining justice:

i confidently rely

on my family friends to sustain

me, when once a legal in

[illegible] Gondy, and my Son

Edgar Chapman, I must say,

I did not inform them

that I had been ill treated

to the extent I was - I did

not state the whole truth to them.

My state of health has not

allowed me to take any very

William had undertaken the businefs

for me, it would have been

investigated sooner.

I am at my Brother's ([30?]

Praying you to use your influence in favor of the doing away of the unjust laws which deprive married woman of the God given right of holding and controlling what property she can honestly get, Being myself a married woman for the last fifteen years and although having a husband that is kind in every other respect, I have had plenty of reason to feel keenly the contempt which the present unjust laws keep upon woman, Man will not be better than the laws he makes Yourself probbaly has seen a multitude of yourn men with very poor buisness capacity, and they nearly all are quite sure to get married sooner or later, many of them to shrewd industrious woman who would be a good advisor for their husbands if they were permitted to do so but the husband bact by the law, scorns her judgment, He will have her to know that

he is capable of mannaging his own concerns, without any of her interference, Now this is all right if you will only give us the same privilege instead of binding us hand and foot and compelling us to use all our industry & energy in a buisness, which we know as it is mannaged must prove a failure, Many of us try this over and over again as the weary years roll away having our worst fears realized nearly every time, but meeting none the less contempt from our husbands if we venture to offer a judgment contrary to his own, Now what we want is this, that you give us the privilege of using our own judgment to gather about us compfharts for ourseleves and children, and do away with or cover up with better ones, all laws that interfere with our so doing,

Yours with much respect and earnest entreaty that you will give this subject some attention and cause it to be noticed by our Legislators,

<text>The Janotta Family Collection contains photographs relating to conductor/composer Alfredo Jannotta, his wife, activist and author Stella Skiff Jannotta, and their family. Several photographs belonged to their son, Navy Rear Admiral A. Vernon Jannotta.

Alfredo Jannotta immigrated from Italy by way of London to Boston in 1865 where he taught voice at the New England Conservatory of Music. He married his first wife, Alice Prudy and they had a son, Edward, before Alfredo moved to Cincinnati in 1868. Alfredo spent 12 years in Cincinnati teaching vocal performance as well as conducting the Cincinnati Choral Society and organizing the first Cincinnati orchestra. He moved back to Boston in 1881 but moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1882 and finally to Chicago in 1888 where he established himself as a vocal teacher.

While teaching in Chicago, Jannotta taught vocal lessons to Stella Skiff whom he married in 1893. Skiff was the daughter of Iowa businessman Vernon William Skiff and his wife, Mary Frances Coffin. Her brother, Frank Vernon Skiff founded the Jewel Tea Company which later grew into a national grocery store chain including Jewel, Osco, Eisner, and White Hen.

Skiff continued her singing career after marrying Jannotta and briefly taught lessons. Between 1894 and 1898, she gave birth to sons A. Vernon, Francis, and Joseph. Between 1917 and 1918, Stella adopted three foster daughters, Margaret, Marion, and Betty (Elizabeth).

In the early 20th century she began taking an active interest in causes including the suffrage movement and socialism. Stella Jannotta joined the Chicago Political Equality League (predecessor to the Chicago League of Women Voters) in 1907. She wrote for the propaganda arm of the organization, including a 1916 article entitled "Public Opinion" which she revisted several times over the following decades.

A. Vernon Jannotta, the oldest son on Alfredo and Stella, served in the United States Navy in both World War I and World War II. He rose through the ranks of the Navy and the Naval Reserves, eventually retiring as a Rear Admiral in 1954. Jannotta received several military honors including the Navy Cross, Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and a Purple Heart.

Jannotta began working at the Jewel Tea Company in 1919 and held several positions at the company for the next 50 years. He also held several executive positions or held stakes in several companies including Lehman Brothers, Motor Institute of America, Tapp, Inc. and Consolidated Trading Corporation.

The finding aid for the Janotta Family Papers, 1809-1972 at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum may be found at http://alplm-cdi.com/chroniclingillinois/items/show/358.

Photographs in this collection include images of Jannotta and Skiff family members as well as students of Alfredo Jannota.</text>
