Ms. Haskell and the school's Board of Trustees successfully fundraised for a new building and rebuilt the school in two years.

The school's leadership made the decision to close the school in 1970 with the final class graduating in 1971. Lewis and Clark Community College completed the purchase of the Monticello College campus in 1972.

The finding aid for the Monticello College (Godfrey, IL) Records at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library may be found at https://illinois.as.atlas-sys.com/repositories/2/resources/545.

The finding aid for the photographic Monticello College Collection at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum may be found at https://illinois.as.atlas-sys.com/repositories/3/resources/4702.

</text>

proof and it appears to me that the proof required to collect the bounty & Back pay would be suffiecent to collect thee pension. He said the proof yet required was proof form some person having a personal knowledge fo the fact, stating When, Where, and under what circumstances the disease contracted that casued his death. I wish to know if he has ever collected my pension or not & if he has not what is the cause of it being detained so long If there is any chance to get my little amount & should be vey glad to receive it for if there is any woman that needs it, it is my self. I have my self and five little Helpless children to support and not one dollar's worth of any thing in the world to go upon but what little I canearn by my daily labor.

(----)

and I think it is a slim looking chance, but as for my part I will try.

Nov 21st/64

Hon. Richard Yates, Governor of the State of Illinois.

Dear Sir

Being well aware of the high position you occupy, it is with some embarrassment that I write & did I not know that within your bosom, beats a kind & generous heart I would not dare to do so. Heretofore you have lent a willing ear to tales of distress, have been a comforter to broken hearts & a friend to the suffering & feeling assured that you will not scorn my humble petition I will make known to you my present distressing circumstances. I am the mother of two soldiers who are in the field fighting for our beloved country & have been from the commencement of the war. They were my supporters for I am a widow & depended much on them for a living which

which I must say with truth had always been sufficient, but lately my boys have sent me no money, for they have not been paid for sometime. But for that I do not murmur had I not been so unmercifully used up by the great tornado that has recently passed through this place.

The hand of Providence has stripped me of my all & left me in a deplorable condition & to you I apply for aid, comfort & advice & I will tell you why. My helpless family were more or less injured by the storm; one of my children had a leg broken another a fearful flesh wound & two more badly bruised, myself not escaping severe injury, having my right ribs broken. I suppose some of the unfortunate people will recieve some assistance from the citizens, but for my part I have had no promise of help from that source, only this that some persons are taking measures to put me & my crippled ones on the county & to that I can never submit. In this

case I deem it unjust, more especially because it is a soldiers family & is it right because of my present misfortune to rank me with common paupers? Perhaps it may appear presumtious to you on my part to address you, but having heard of many kind acts & favors from you towards soldiers & soldiers families I am hopeful still that I will not be passed unnoticed. Governor Yates has been a friend to the people of Illinois & how often have we heard the soldiers bless him for his marked kindness to them & their families!

Once more to the point - if there is anything you can do for me in any way whatever, whether it be assistance or advice in Heaven's name, I beg you to do it. Every thing I owned was swept away & the family left in a crippled condition but if I can obtain some assistance from honorable sources sufficient to start me again, I shall be content to wait until I can do something myself. Hoping that I may find

favor with you, enough at least to induce you to write to me, I drop the subject. With great respect I subscribe myself your humble servent

Mary A. Emerson.

Emerson Mary A

Chester Nov 21st 1864.

She has two sons in the Army on whom she was wholly dependent for support & they dont receive pay any more, hence she is destitute.

Further - the late Tornado in that vicinity swept away everything she had & injured her & her two small children so that they will be helplessly crippled. If possible she implores the Govr in Heaven's name to assist her.

Nov 21st/64

And. Porter

Dear Sir

you will think it strange to receive a letter from a Lady with regard to military matters - but has not Woman done much & can she not still do something - I paid the Ill Infantry a visit & found all but 4 or 5 boys in fine spirits those I found low spirited & nearly broken hearted - near a year ago a little Trouble occured & these boys was put under arest - it was done through their unpricipaled Capt T. M. Rose of Co. G. & those Boys are still under arest their present Col. Coats. tells me he got up a partition & had it approved by Gen. McPherson & sent to Gen. Grant to have them released -yesterday he recd an answer saying he could do nothing until the sentence at Washington was comuted now no one knew thare was a sentence on the nature

of it if any -- today I found them in dispar they knew thare was papers sent to Washington they have never had a trial & are kept in [illegible]
[illegible] - have drawn no pay & some of them have families with little children -- they are all of them good & faithful Boys as all in the Reg pronounce them such. they have the entire sympathy of the commanding officers from Col down - now my object Sir is to ask you to do something for those brave boys that helped to elect you to your position & would do it again & more than that they stood so bravely at Donolson & at Shilo & have suffered the long & tedious seige here at Vicksburg -- they only wish to be relieved that they can take a part in the duty of the rest of the Reg -- they are good boys & all of them ocupied respectible positions at home -- but as they told me they are only Privates & can do nothing - but thank God it is the Private that will gain the great victory if it is ever gained.

now Sir will you telegraph to Washington & see whare the trouble is

& why it is that those Boys are kept here in the dark - Gen Ransome sent the papers but he has gone & left the matter silent

I no I do not appeal to you in vain. They are our own Ill Boys & ought to receive the sympathy of every Citizen of the state -- hoping to hear
from you & be the mesenger of glad tidings to the hearts of those boys that are nearly broken I will close

Very Respectfully

Hon Mr Yates

Dear Sir

you will think it strange to receive a letter from a Lady with regard to military matters - but has not Woman done much & can she not still do something - I paid the Ill Infantry a visit & found all but 4 or 5 boys in fine spirits those I found low spirited & nearly broken hearted - near a year ago a little Trouble occured & these boys was put under arest - it was done through their unpricipaled Capt T. M. Rose of Co.

Very Respectfully

yours
