My dear darling Edwina
I have just been
wishing for a letter from
you. its 5 weeks since
you wrote to me last,
& I do so miss your
letters. I am afraid
you have got a Beau
or something to make you
forget me. Rosealie
had a letter New Years
day, from you, the last
letter I wrote to you the
was 29th of Decr - perhaps
you may not have Received it. we have

had dreadful Weather
but to day its Sun shiny
& Rose has just come
in from a little walk,
the first time for 6 weeks.
I have just read in
this morning's paper of
the Snow Storm in London
giving a decriptin Just
as it was the winter
of 1835. The last time I was
in London. it has been
just the same here
this winter. When I
was 14 years old it
was a dreadful cold
winter in London,
the Thames was frozen
so thick that a Fair
& Barbacu was held
on it. I walked on it,

[vertical in right margin]
My paper is miserable I can hardly
write on it

but I was so in hopes
it would have been
milder this winter, but
I think the Cold has been
the same every where
this year, in the South
the same as in the Northern
states - I want to hear
how Papa is. he always
tells me he is well. but I
am afraid he is working
himself almost to death.
its all uphill for him
& no rest - & I expect [?]
Mama being so ill worries
him a good deal. you must
try and make him as
Cheerful as you can
I cannot tell how very
glad I shall be when
this English Engagement

comes to an end - &
you can breath some
fresh & pure Air -free
from fogs. give my
love to all Aunt Asia's
family, I am going to
write to her in a few
days. love to Papa
& Mama - & lots for
your own dear self -
I expect a letter from you
& tell me all the news.
God Bless & Protect you
ever is my fervent
prayer from yr loving
Grandma M A Booth

I have just been
wishing for a letter from
you. its 5 weeks since
you wrote to me last,
& I do so miss your

letter I wrote to you the
was 29th of Decr - perhaps
you may not have Received it. we have

had dreadful Weather
but to day its Sun shiny
& Rose has just come
in from a little walk,
the first time for 6 weeks.
I have just read in
this morning's paper of
the Snow Storm in London
giving a decriptin Just
as it was the winter
of 1835. The last time I was
in London. it has been
just the same here
this winter. When I
was 14 years old it
was a dreadful cold
winter in London,
the Thames was frozen
so thick that a Fair
& Barbacu was held
on it. I walked on it,

[vertical in right margin]
My paper is miserable I can hardly
write on it

but I was so in hopes
it would have been
milder this winter, but
I think the Cold has been
the same every where
this year, in the South
the same as in the Northern
states - I want to hear
how Papa is. he always
tells me he is well. but I
am afraid he is working
himself almost to death.
its all uphill for him
& no rest - & I expect [?]
Mama being so ill worries
him a good deal. you must
try and make him as
Cheerful as you can
I cannot tell how very
glad I shall be when
this English Engagement

comes to an end - &
you can breath some
fresh & pure Air -free
from fogs. give my
love to all Aunt Asia's
family, I am going to
write to her in a few
days. love to Papa
& Mama - & lots for
your own dear self -
I expect a letter from you
& tell me all the news.
God Bless & Protect you

prayer from yr loving
Grandma M A Booth

April 5th 1881

My dearest Edwina

I have received yours of the 20th of March. I was so sorry to learn how dreadfully your mama was afflicted -- God help her, & restore her. I have been expecting daily to see her death Telegraphed. but, its often the case that persons will last a length of time insane, & be very troubelsem to others that have to watch & care for them. They are never to be trusted alone for a minute They will do a mischief to themselves or others. - Therefore a very

quiet careful spot ought to be thought of where she could do no harm, it seems hard to confine her - yet, it would be the most proper if it has to be done at all -- tell Aunt Asia to talk with your Papa - & try and convince him how dangerous & cuning madness is -- & neither you or your Papa can have an hours peace of mind. it distresses me dreadfully. I am all the time in a state of nervous anxiety fearing the worst. I am not able to write half what I think of it, - but I have seen and known a good many cases that perhaps it would have been better to have the patients prevented from doing harm,

I know how badly your dear Papa feels, but its the will of The Almighty, & we must submit I pray for her daily. & for you all. I hope you are in health & try & keep up your spirits for your Papas sake -- I know you will, its a trying time for him, -- I am so anxious to hear if she knew her Mother.

I hope she will help to take care of her & relieve you some -- try & walk out & don't let it grieve you more then you can help -- I am in hopes of a letter in a day or two from your Papa -- but I am afraid his rest from acting wont benefit him when his mind is harassed,

The weather is still very cold in N Y -. Frost & Ice this morning. I have not seen anything of Marie I don't know why she behaves so queer to me Rosalie has called on her twice, but she don't return it - she went to Cincinati & took Mr. Tiske with her to look after her property. Rose asked her if she was engaged, but she did not satisfy her only said perhaps so. She has not acted for a long time -- Bless you my darling. I must conclude having to mail this right away give my love to all, Rose & I have both been sick since I wrote to you but are better now Thank God -- ever your loving Grandma

I never see or hear a word of Marie - Rosalie has called twice on her but she dont return the visits, she gave up Acting, the last she played with Lester Wallack at the Grand Opera House after that I heard she had gone to Philadelphia - but I dont know if it was true. Bless you my darling child & I pray to God to keep you in health & make you as comfortable as Circumstances will permit

ever Yr loving Grandma

My dear June
I hope this will find
you in good health. I think its 3
mails that I have missed writing
to you. & I am afraid Edwin
has done the same. When the [last?]
mail left he was just leaving
Washington - & when he came
to Baltimore it was too late
& I was almost too late
this time, for I only came
from the Country to day,
and am dreadful tired -
Rosalie & I went up on
tuesday - to move all our
things out - for I have Rented
the House & Farm for seven
years - at [125?] dollars a year
its little enough - but I think it

better than having the House
shut up - and the Men who
have taken it promise to improve
the place. & they pay the Taxes also,
it is a perfect Wilderness Now,
the Negroes have been there
a year - & have paid me
nothing yet. Edwin is
playing now in Richmond
I found a letter awaiting
my return - & he says
his first night - last Monday
- was very good - and he
thinks he will do a fine
business - John is in Richmond
too & Edwin thinks he will
get along first rate - he plays
some very good parts - he
played Richmond in Baltimore

to Edwins Richard - & he acted
very well - & looked well &
his Voice is so like Edwins
you could scarcly tell them
apart - [Dave Anderson?]
stayed 3 week with Edwin
part of the time they went
up to the Farm - then he
Returned to New York - I
did hear he was going back
to California - I believe he
is sorry he left there -
When he first came he talked
of going to England - but I think
he has given up that Notion.
I hope dear little Mary is
got quite well, give our
loves to her & lots of
Kisses I should like to

see her very much - but
I suppose you never intend
to come here again - God
bless you my dear Boy. I
wish you were nearer to
me so I could see you
sometimes - Joseph has
a Situation as assistant Treasurer
in Baltimore, at the [Dobleday?] St
he receives 4 dollars a week,
it just about keeps him in [cigars?],
John [got 11?] - I hope you
will write by return, for I
am always anxious to hear
from you. You must Excuse
the Shortness of this, as I am
[hardly?] got over my journey,
God in Heaven Bless & guard you my
dear Boy, is the Constant prayer of Yr [in margin:] Mother M A Booth

<text>David Davis, a lawyer, politician, distinguished jurist and businessman, was born in Maryland, educated at Kenyon College in Ohio, and studied law at Yale University. Davis married Sarah Woodruff Walker in 1838 and they had five children including George Perrin Davis and Sarah "Sally" Davis.

In 1844, Davis won election as a Whig to the Illinois Legislature, and four years later was elected Judge of Illinois Eighth Judicial Circuit, where he served on the bench during Lincoln's remaining years as an attorney on the circuit. The two became close friends, and Davis worked diligently as Lincoln's campaign manager at the 1860 Republican nominating convention in Chicago.

In 1862, President Lincoln appointed Davis to the United States Supreme Court, where Davis wrote the majority opinion in Ex parte Milligan, a landmark decision restricting the rights of military courts to try civilians. In 1877, he resigned from the court after being elected to the United States Senate by the Illinois Legislature. Davis served as Senate president pro tempore from 1881 to 1883, and was known unofficially as "Mr. Vice President." He retired from the Senate in 1883.

Davis invested in real estate with De Witt County attorney, Clifton H. Moore, and became a man of considerable wealth. He had the distinction of being the largest landowner in Illinois. At the time of his death, June 26, 1886, his estate was valued between four to five million dollars-a huge fortune in his day.

The finding aid for the David Davis Family Papers at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum may be found at: http://alplm-cdi.com/chroniclingillinois/items/show/165.

Photographs in this collection include portraits of several members of the David Davis and George P. Davis families. The collection also includes portraits of Judge Davis' law colleagues, images of Bloomington, Illinois, and photographs of miscellaneous buildings throughout the United States.</text>

<text>The Janotta Family Collection contains photographs relating to conductor/composer Alfredo Jannotta, his wife, activist and author Stella Skiff Jannotta, and their family. Several photographs belonged to their son, Navy Rear Admiral A. Vernon Jannotta.

Alfredo Jannotta immigrated from Italy by way of London to Boston in 1865 where he taught voice at the New England Conservatory of Music. He married his first wife, Alice Prudy and they had a son, Edward, before Alfredo moved to Cincinnati in 1868. Alfredo spent 12 years in Cincinnati teaching vocal performance as well as conducting the Cincinnati Choral Society and organizing the first Cincinnati orchestra. He moved back to Boston in 1881 but moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1882 and finally to Chicago in 1888 where he established himself as a vocal teacher.

While teaching in Chicago, Jannotta taught vocal lessons to Stella Skiff whom he married in 1893. Skiff was the daughter of Iowa businessman Vernon William Skiff and his wife, Mary Frances Coffin. Her brother, Frank Vernon Skiff founded the Jewel Tea Company which later grew into a national grocery store chain including Jewel, Osco, Eisner, and White Hen.

Skiff continued her singing career after marrying Jannotta and briefly taught lessons. Between 1894 and 1898, she gave birth to sons A. Vernon, Francis, and Joseph. Between 1917 and 1918, Stella adopted three foster daughters, Margaret, Marion, and Betty (Elizabeth).

In the early 20th century she began taking an active interest in causes including the suffrage movement and socialism. Stella Jannotta joined the Chicago Political Equality League (predecessor to the Chicago League of Women Voters) in 1907. She wrote for the propaganda arm of the organization, including a 1916 article entitled "Public Opinion" which she revisted several times over the following decades.

A. Vernon Jannotta, the oldest son on Alfredo and Stella, served in the United States Navy in both World War I and World War II. He rose through the ranks of the Navy and the Naval Reserves, eventually retiring as a Rear Admiral in 1954. Jannotta received several military honors including the Navy Cross, Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and a Purple Heart.

Jannotta began working at the Jewel Tea Company in 1919 and held several positions at the company for the next 50 years. He also held several executive positions or held stakes in several companies including Lehman Brothers, Motor Institute of America, Tapp, Inc. and Consolidated Trading Corporation.

The finding aid for the Janotta Family Papers, 1809-1972 at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum may be found at http://alplm-cdi.com/chroniclingillinois/items/show/358.

Photographs in this collection include images of Jannotta and Skiff family members as well as students of Alfredo Jannota.</text>
