<text>The Janotta Family Collection contains photographs relating to conductor/composer Alfredo Jannotta, his wife, activist and author Stella Skiff Jannotta, and their family. Several photographs belonged to their son, Navy Rear Admiral A. Vernon Jannotta.

Alfredo Jannotta immigrated from Italy by way of London to Boston in 1865 where he taught voice at the New England Conservatory of Music. He married his first wife, Alice Prudy and they had a son, Edward, before Alfredo moved to Cincinnati in 1868. Alfredo spent 12 years in Cincinnati teaching vocal performance as well as conducting the Cincinnati Choral Society and organizing the first Cincinnati orchestra. He moved back to Boston in 1881 but moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1882 and finally to Chicago in 1888 where he established himself as a vocal teacher.

While teaching in Chicago, Jannotta taught vocal lessons to Stella Skiff whom he married in 1893. Skiff was the daughter of Iowa businessman Vernon William Skiff and his wife, Mary Frances Coffin. Her brother, Frank Vernon Skiff founded the Jewel Tea Company which later grew into a national grocery store chain including Jewel, Osco, Eisner, and White Hen.

Skiff continued her singing career after marrying Jannotta and briefly taught lessons. Between 1894 and 1898, she gave birth to sons A. Vernon, Francis, and Joseph. Between 1917 and 1918, Stella adopted three foster daughters, Margaret, Marion, and Betty (Elizabeth).

In the early 20th century she began taking an active interest in causes including the suffrage movement and socialism. Stella Jannotta joined the Chicago Political Equality League (predecessor to the Chicago League of Women Voters) in 1907. She wrote for the propaganda arm of the organization, including a 1916 article entitled "Public Opinion" which she revisted several times over the following decades.

A. Vernon Jannotta, the oldest son on Alfredo and Stella, served in the United States Navy in both World War I and World War II. He rose through the ranks of the Navy and the Naval Reserves, eventually retiring as a Rear Admiral in 1954. Jannotta received several military honors including the Navy Cross, Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and a Purple Heart.

Jannotta began working at the Jewel Tea Company in 1919 and held several positions at the company for the next 50 years. He also held several executive positions or held stakes in several companies including Lehman Brothers, Motor Institute of America, Tapp, Inc. and Consolidated Trading Corporation.

The finding aid for the Janotta Family Papers, 1809-1972 at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum may be found at http://alplm-cdi.com/chroniclingillinois/items/show/358.

Photographs in this collection include images of Jannotta and Skiff family members as well as students of Alfredo Jannota.</text>

<text>Frank E. Stevens was a lawyer, banker, newspaper editor and writer based in Illinois. Stevens was born and educated in Dixon, Illinois. He studied law in Sycamore, Illinois, and was admitted to the bar in 1877. Shortly after that he moved to South Dakota where he operated the Beadle County National Bank until 1890 when he moved to Chicago and worked in a brokerage business.

In 1907 Stevens returned to Sycamore, Illinois, where he published the Dixon Weekly Citizen and later the Sycamore Tribune. He retired from the newspaper business in 1928 and was elected mayor of Sycamore in 1931.

Governor Henry Horner appointed Stevens to the War Records Division of the office of the Adjutant General. Stevens was a historian who authored several historical works including The Black Hawk War. Stevens used the majority of the items in the collection while researching and writing The Black Hawk War.

The Black Hawk War (1832), although brief, has much significance for Native American history. In April, tribal groups of Sauk, Meskwakis, and Kickapoo, led by Chief Black Hawk of the Sauk, crossed the Mississippi River from Iowa into Illinois. Known as the British Band, they claimed lands under the 1804 Treaty of St. Louis, a treaty the whites disputed. Fearful, militia’s fired on the Native American delegation in what led to the Battle of Stillman’s Run, a resounding defeat for the militias. Black Hawk was eventually defeat, however, at the battles of Wisconsin Heights and Bad Axe. Historically, the Black Hawk War legitimized and strengthened forcible relocation of Native American tribes further west.

The finding aid for the Frank E. Stevens Papers, 1832-1939 at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum is located at: http://alplm-cdi.com/chroniclingillinois/items/show/610.

Photographs in this collection include images of several individuals connected to the Black Hawk War including Chief Shabbona, Major Isaiah Stillman, Brigadier General Milton K. Alexander, Colonel Nathan Boone, and Brigadier General Henry Atkinson. The collection also includes images of prominent Illinois residents from the mid and late 19th century including actress Mary Garden, William S. Hamilton, and Charles B. Farwell.</text>

Ms. Haskell and the school's Board of Trustees successfully fundraised for a new building and rebuilt the school in two years.

The school's leadership made the decision to close the school in 1970 with the final class graduating in 1971.

Our recent letters from Frank speak of a great deal of sickness in Camp, where he is located; and we learn from other sources that it is a most unhealthy place, and some of the men at Helena complain bitterly of Curtis for sending them to such an unhealthy locality, when, as they say, there was no need of it. Frank has made no complaints, has only spoken of the amount of sickness.

In one letter he states that not one officer is fit for duty in the 11th Wisconsin, and only four in his, the 33rd Regiment. In his last letter, he says, "There is much sickness, and frequent deaths here, some from sun stroke, more from fever. We hear several times, almost every day, the sad sound of the three volleys, which tell of the death and burial of another soldier. A large portion of Co. K. (Frank's company) is sick, so as to be unfit for duty; two men are sick, who were never so before, during the year we have been in the service." &c.

Now in view of all these circumstances, and their long distance from all their friends, I have thought it possible that Gov. Yates might be willing to send some medical man down to look after their comfort, as he did over in Missouri, and has done in other instances. My reasons for troubling you, is, to ask you to confer with Gov. Yates on the subject, (if you consider it suitable) and see if he would not commission Mr Adams to go on such an errand. I think he might do much good, and would be much happier than he is in staying home, doing nothing to help along the great interests of our country. Frank says, he is well, but of course we feel intensely anxious about him under the circumstances. If Mr Adams could go, I would see to getting up a box of delicacies for the sick &c. to send by him. I am told that there is no security in sending such things down there, except in charge of some responsible person.

Please excuse me for taking this liberty of troubling you, and do not take the trouble to reply to this, as it is not necessary. If Gov. Yates thinks proper to make any movement of the kind, he will of course communicate it to Mr Adams; if not, it is all right. I have said nothing

Dear Sir

I am exceedingly troubled, because of the dismissal of Gibbs: he has been so unoffending, industrious, and in every respect most acceptable to us. Indeed I cannot spare him from the conservatory. Be pleased to listen to my appeal in his behalf. My interest in retaining him is very strong partly because of his kindness to my children, and his popularity among the servants. The person whom you have appointed, is unfit for the duty.
