My dear Mrs White:

Your letter recently received has afforded me much pleasure & believe me, in this far distant land, you are frequently remembered both in my thoughts & prayers. Past friendship, through the trying years of the war, and the fearful loss, we both have sustained in our dearly beloved husbands are ties, too strong for time or distance to sever.

Ill health rendered it absolutely necessary that I should come South, & by degrees, I find myself regaining strength. For sorrow, such as ours, there is [illegible] before the grave and Heaven, with reunion with our loved ones, can alone heal, bleeding, broken hearts. Whenever I am feeling so sadly, I lead a life of isolation & retirement, although I have been here several weeks, I am sure few or none are aware of it. I am not feeling sufficiently well in mind or body, to undertake Italy this winter. [Next?] winter, I shall try to come

down in Nov. The season is already so far advanced & nothing I could see could interest me in the terrible month of April. I feel that in a few days I must make the afforded return to my young son, who is now in Frankfort. When I visit Italy some months hence, it would be such a pleasure to have you as a companion. We could visit places of interest without being recognized. Of course, Americans abound everywhere--- & in my morning walks in the sunshine you can always recognise them

After we have suffered heavy afflictions, life is at best, a fearful endurance. To me, every thing looks so desolate.

My dear Mrs. White:

Your last kind letter has been received & I hasten to explain expressions that may have surprised you when I last wrote. I was then just recovering

from a very severe attack of heart complaint. There is no mistaking the symptoms of a complaint that has carried off so many members of our family - with so much less of grief, than I have been called upon to endure - a second physician

has since told me, that he thought my blood was turning to water & it was working its way to my heart - of course, I find myself gradually bloating, but my aching, broken, desolated life, may have to continue, longer than it is desirable, but I am advised to seek a much warmer climate, for the winter.

In the event of my son, not remaining here longer than Christmas - when for a few months he proposes a rest for himself for his young life, has been very greatly overtaxed, I have been thinking dear friend, of going to Florida soon after the first of Jany - to remain South until the latter part of April. Can it be that you will accompany me - if I do so.

5

ML

All I write you, I am sure you will consider strictly private - and when I place my plan & proposal before you. I will trust to your noble heart & unfailing kindness, even if your ideas do not coincide with mine not to feel displeased. Of course, I cannot go alone & in my state of

mind, a congenial, sympathising companion, is every thing to me. Now, for my plans. If you will go with me & pass the winter, where we both may find distraction of mind, I will so gladly pay the way for us both every where we go - the board - South is so much less than N.Y. or Chicago, is

said to be half as little that each one of us can meet that separately. If you consent to going & the arrangement about my son's plans agree we can cross over to New Orleans & it may be extend our voyage to Havana & Cuba. All this is entirely entre nous - to be mentioned to no one - if you please. I want so much to be with you, for I feel

myself so utterly alone in all my wretchedness. Mine is the agony of a broken heart. Without my blessed, darling son, who was such a comfort to me I can scarcely live. My thoughts are continually in that bright world, where my beloved treasures are and where I trust, I may ere long be. Please write me at once. Ever your most affectionate friend.

My Dear Mrs Alexander:

Ever since your departure to Kentucky, I have frequently determined to write to you for knowing full well, the trials you had to pass through this past winter my sincerest sympathies, were with you. Yet now, in your hour of heart rending bereavement how much I have grieved with you, tongue, cannot tell, your sorrows, have only opened my own bleeding wounds afresh earth, can afford, no balm, for

[written vertically across this page]
Dear little Taddie sends his love to you the boys not forgetting little "Junebug"

such bereavements, as we have been called upon to pass through. Your lovely family, of little boys, were very dear to me your darling little Carroll, was my especial favorite. My precious Willie, was another of the pure ones, too good for earth, hence early transplanted to a more congenial soil. They are so happy & rejoicing, whilst we are bowed down, for their loss & yet our grief, how natural it is!

Words cannot express, how much, I shall miss your presence at the Soldiers' Home, the coming summer, it was a most unexpected and

inexplicable affair, both to Mr L. & myself, we were really so sincerely attached to your noble Husband & yourself, your kindness to us, was so great, at all times, that we shall always feel under obligations & in coming years, I trust we may meet, my acquaintance, with you, has been, in such a time of deep sorrow, that I have always felt, in my nervous, miserable state, I was not able to do myself justice. I am indebted to you, whilst, in such moods, for many genial, pleasant hours, and if I were, now, with you we could freely weep together. The loss of my noble beautiful boy, is as keen a pang

to me, now, as it was at first, indeed, I realise it more, only the grave, can close upon, such afflictions. I have taken the great liberty of sending you a little package, it was a small part of a supply, I brought from home, three years since, not knowing whether, we had not to supply the table, in the W. H. I am sure, as a housekeeper, you will excuse, my sending such a poor offering. I trust, when your cares & feelings will permit, you will write to me, with love to your children & friends, I remain ever truly

March 13th 64

My Dear Mrs Alexander:

Ever since your departure to Kentucky, I have frequently determined to write to you for knowing full well, the trials you had to pass through this past winter my sincerest sympathies, were with you. Yet now, in your hour of heart rending bereavement how much I have grieved with you, tongue, cannot tell, your sorrows, have only opened my own bleeding wounds afresh earth, can afford, no balm, for

[written vertically across this page] Dear little Taddie sends his love to you the boys not forgetting little "Junebug"

such bereavements, as we have been called upon to pass through.

I would have had, you remain near me. As it was, perhaps it was best - for in my great state of anguish & excitement, probably calmer & more philosophic temperaments, were the most appropriate persons to be near me; yet your nature & mine, are so far removed, from such natures, that in our natural moods, they are not congenial. <text>
Sunday evening

Dec 5th 69

My dear Mrs Orne:

Three evenings since, "Taddie Lincoln Lincoln" mailed a letter to you, with Mr Sumner's, enclosed within it. I do so hope, you received the latter. Senator Fenton, is by this time, doubtless on the stormy deep. Knowing what a power he will be in the Senate, I wish very much, he has been present the first day of the session. He cannot certainly arrive in Wash---until the first

of the 2nd week---and are you aware that Congress---will only most probably remain in session about two weeks, ere they adjourn for the Christmas Holidays. So even if I had hope---that charming, but deceitful syren on my side---I could scarcely suppose any good, would be effected in my cause by the time, when happier people are rejoicing over their comforts---alas, alas, what can I again expect, but to be left out in the cold. For it has become very much so here---how is it with you?

Oh that we could be together this wintry night---for how very much, we would have to say to each other. I can readily imagine, that your good, kind husband is even now, in Wash and that his voice & influence will be excited to the utmost. I must acknowledge---a great weakness about wishing to see what our friend, Col Forney, will have to say, [dinna?] forget me, should you receive any of his papers. I am very glad---that the time has come---for Congress to meet so that for weal or woe---I shall not be long kept in ignorance perhaps it may be bliss.

I hope you have entirely recovered from your cold. Poor Gen Sickles I suppose, he, too, is watching & waiting. It cannot be---that he will not be confirmed. Is Laura going to school in Spain? What changes---time, brings to us all. I sometimes feel as if I had lived a century. "My life, is not dated by years." Taddie, as usual is hurrying me so I will close---with ever so much love to your daughters & yourself. I shall feel anxious until I learn, whether you have received Sumner's letter. You are a wicked woman to be carrying on so many flirtations---you must remember that you have

[written vertically across page 1]
a very handsome & agreeable husband in America.

In great haste hoping very soon to hear from you---I remain always your affectionate friend

Mary Lincoln

                <text>

[written vertically across page 1] a very handsome & agreeable husband in America.

In great haste hoping very soon to hear from you---I remain always your affectionate friend

5 Have you received the letter I wrote you the first of the week? So our good friend Genl Schenck has left Paris – en route home. He is a most agreeable, warmhearted man & I have always liked him. I do not wonder that he could not exactly comprehend, the depth and extent of my sadness and desolation. None but my Heavenly father, can do that. Gen S. remembers me as a gay, cheerful woman, well dressed & surrounded by many persons. What a contrast, this presents dark picture.

6 His interest in my affairs – soon to be canvassed in Con carries much weight with it – not so great however in my estimation as the Phil members – all of them together will be formidable. If your own kind husband, would pardon my suggesting that if in the first commencement of the session – he would go to Wash & use his influence, it would be very greatly to my advantage. He would make friends for the measure & soften those, who might naturally oppose it – among the latter such men as Brooks, of N.Y. F Woods & others, whom your husband’s social position-would cause them to yield. And with these men - social recognition is a great deal if they are rich.

7 Sumner- I think was not in Wash, to judge by the papers, even the earliest part of this month, so my dear friend, he has not yet had time to reply to yours but never judge him, by his silence. how you would admire that man, if you knew him as I do. For the last eight years, he has been as a brother to me. I have had so many beautiful letters from him, but since he had such trouble about his wife - I fancy he writes to no one. Although I have seen him since. He has heart as soft as a woman towards those he likes & I happen to be one of the cherished few.

During the rebellion when the fearful war was raging, we were drawn all of us very closely together. We met quite as frequently, with pale faces and cheeks, hot with tears & since my darling husband passed away Mr. S. has wept as bitterly, whilst sitting by my side, over my terrible bereavement and what he considered his own great loss as few men could do. He is just as warmly interested as you are in my cause & in both cases - I am aware – it is a great deal. Thank Heaven for raising me up such friends in this the time of darkness. I will say no more – you will understand me.

[Page 4 continues with overlapping sideways writing which reads as follows]

Mr S– will most eagerly seek to cultivate your acquaintance – for he is very appreciative.

Your present noble conduct regarding the pending measure will so exalt you in Mr. Sumner’s estimation as well as your being a sister of Mr. Charles O’Neil of whom I have heard Mr. S speak so highly that if you are ever near him you will have a realizing sense of Mr S’s nobleness of soul – and general agreeability. You will observe that I am quite grateful.

                  <text>
Joseph G. Cannon was born in Guilford, North Carolina, the son of Dr. Horace Cannon and Gulielma Hollingsworth Cannon. After the death of his father in 1851, Joseph went to work in a pottery in Annapolis, Indiana. While working as a clerk in a store he met John F. Usher, a lawyer, who agreed to let Cannon read the law under him and work as a clerk in his office. Cannon attended law school at the University of Cincinnati, earning his diploma in six months. After attempting to set up practice in Shelbyville, Illinois with little luck, he moved to Tuscola where he worked the circuit. Cannon was elected state’s attorney in 1861, holding the position until 1868. In 1862 he married Mary Reed, from Ohio, who had come to Illinois to live with her brother and teach school. The Cannons moved to Danville, Illinois, in 1876.

Cannon sucessfully ran for Congress as a Republican in 1872, beginning what would become a 46 year career in the United States House of Representatives. During his time in the House of Representatives Cannon served on the Committee on Appropriations, eventually becoming chairman, and the Committee on Rules. Cannon served as the chairman of the Committee on Rules and as Speaker concurrently, allowing him to determine committee chairmanships and members as well as what bills would reach the floor of the House. Cannon lost this power in 1910 after a Democrat-led revolt.

Cannon, known as "Uncle Joe," rose in the Republican Party, becoming Speaker of the House from 1903-1910. Cannon is the second-longest serving Speaker of the House and was the first member of the House to pass 40 years of service (non-consecutive). Cannon lost two elections during his career in the House of Representatives (1890 and 1912) but he regained his seat in the following elections each time.

Cannon retired from the House of Representatives in 1923 at the age of eighty-six. He and his wife had two daughters, Mabel and Helen. Mary, or Molly as Cannon called her, died in 1899. Cannon died in 1926.

The finding aid for the Joseph Gurney Cannon Papers, 1879-1940 at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum may be found at http://alplm-cdi.com/chroniclingillinois/items/show/116https://illinois.as.atlas-sys.com/repositories/2/resources/232.

Photographs in this collection include portraits of Joseph Cannon and images of Cannon attending events.
</text>

</text>
