Founded by Captain Benjamin Godfrey to provide education for women, the school offered two years of classes for attendees based on the idea that “if you educate a man you educate an individual; educate a woman and you educate a whole family.” Godfrey selected Reverend Theron Baldwin to serve as the first head of the Monticello Female Seminary. In 1867 Harriet Haskell became principal, a position she held until her death in 1907.  On November 4, 1888, a fire broke out in the building and consumed the entire structure. Ms. Haskell and the school's Board of Trustees successfully fundraised for a new building and rebuilt the school in two years. The school's leadership made the decision to close the school in 1970 with the final class graduating in 1971. Lewis and Clark Community College completed the purchase of the Monticello College campus in 1972. Keller began his working career as a school teacher and principal in Ava, Illinois, before becoming a lawyer and eventually working in the mining industry in the western United States and Mexico. Keller represented southern Illinois as a member of the Illinois State Senate (1913-1917) where he advocated for old-age pensions, woman’s suffrage, pure food and drug laws, and the eight-hour day. He served five terms in the United States House of Representatives (1931-1941). While in Congress, he was a member of the liberal bloc that supported New Deal legislation; introduced railroad retirement pension legislation; sought relief aid for Southern Illinois and envisioned Crab Orchard Lake project on a grand scale. He unsuccessfully campaigned for re-election in ever election between 1940-1948 with the exception of 1946 when he was in Mexico as a special adviser to the United States Ambassador. Kent E. Davis (Democrat) served in the Illinois House of Representatives from 1943 through 1978. He represented the First District from 1943-1956, the Twentieth District from 1957-1964, the Twenty-second District from 1967-1978, and as an At-large Representative from 1965-1966. Known as “Deacon” because of his pulpit-style oratory, Davis fought for civil and women’s rights, fair employment practices, and the care and protection of children. Included among his major legislative accomplishments was the passage of legislation creating the Fair Employment Practices Commission in 1961 and a resolution establishing a commission on child care study in 1974. Davis also played an important role in securing funds for the restoration of the Old State Capitol in Springfield. In addition to being chairman of the Public Aid, Health, Welfare and Safety Committee (1961-1962 and 1965-1968, Davis served on a number of other committees including Appropriations, Insurance, Rules and Public Utilities, Railroads, and Aviation. Henry's son, William, platted out the town and made land donations for churches, a school, and a city jail. William (1812-1899) and his wife, Mary Ann, had five children live to adulthood including George Wade Bacon Sadorus (1838-1911) and Henry Washington Sadorus (1840-1927). Horner was committed to cleaning up corruption in the Chicago-run Democratic Party machine. An expert on Abraham Lincoln, Horner was an avid collector of Lincoln artifacts and papers. His huge collection of Lincolniana became the foundation of the Illinois State Historical Library and its successor institution, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library. Title A name given to the resource Albert Louis Loud Collection Subject The topic of the resource Loud, Albert Louis, 1886-1940 Vaniman, Chester Melvin, 1866-1912 Airship Aeronautics Description An account of the resource Albert Louis Loud was born in Virden, Illinois, in 1886. He began his career as an engineer accompanying his brother in law, photographer and engineer Melvin Vaniman, on Walter Wellman's third unsuccessful attempt to reach the North Pole by dirigible in 1909. The Wellman-owned dirigible, America, ended its flight after two hours when the ship lost the ability to stabilize and maintain altitude. In October 1910, Loud again accompanied Vaniman as an assistant engineer on the America during an unsuccessful attempt to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The crossing failed after 38 hours in flight after which the Royal Mail steamship Trent rescued the crew. Loud continued to work with Vaniman on a second attempt at the crossing on the airship Akron, but retired before the voyage in 1912 which ended when the airship exploded shortly after take off killing all aboard. After his retirement, Loud moved to Danville Illinois and worked as an auditor for Fidelity Loan Company and as a salesman for a printing company. National Guard Coal miners Mining industry Miners African Americans Description An account of the resource In September 1898 representatives of the United Mine Workers of America stopped a railroad car in Virden, Illinois, filled with potential African American strikebreakers. The train continued on to Springfield after the union members informed them of the strike between the members and the Chicago-Virden Coal Company. On October 12, 1898, a second train of African American strikebreakers from Birmingham, Alabama, and security guards arrived in Virden. The security guards opened fire when striking miners attempted to surround the train at the entrance to the mining facility. The train departed Virden after twenty minutes of gunfire and headed for Springfield. By the end of the conflict four security guards and seven striking miners were killed and 30 people were wounded. The mine owners accepted unionization at the mine in November 1898 and the mine remained segregated for many years after. Similar conflicts occurred in Pana on April 10, 1899, Lauder on June 6, 1899, and Carterville on September 17, 1899. Still Image A static visual representation.
