Founded by Captain Benjamin Godfrey to provide education for women, the school offered two years of classes for attendees based on the idea that “if you educate a man you educate an individual; educate a woman and you educate a whole family.” Godfrey selected Reverend Theron Baldwin to serve as the first head of the Monticello Female Seminary. In 1867 Harriet Haskell became principal, a position she held until her death in 1907.  On November 4, 1888, a fire broke out in the building and consumed the entire structure. Ms. Haskell and the school's Board of Trustees successfully fundraised for a new building and rebuilt the school in two years. The school's leadership made the decision to close the school in 1970 with the final class graduating in 1971. Lewis and Clark Community College completed the purchase of the Monticello College campus in 1972. The canal serves as a shipping link between the Great Lakes Waterway and the Missisippi River and it carries Chicago's sewage to the Des Plaines River.  Construction on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal began in 1889 with the creation of the Municipal Sanitary District in response to fears that sewage pumped into the Chicago River and into Lake Michigan would contaminate the city's drinking water. The canal also served as a replacement for the narrower and shallower Illinois and Michigan Canal. Canal construction ran under the leadership of chief engineer Isham Randolph from September 3, 1892, known as "Shovel Day," until January 2, 1900, when water was first released into the canal.  During the construction process, engineers successfully and permanently reversed the flow of the Chicago River, enabling it to carry waste water away to the Mississippi River and eventually the Gulf of Mexico. Admiral George Dewey dedicated the canal on May 2, 1900. Additional construction extending the canal to Joliet ran from 1903-1907.  Photographs in this collection include images of the construction of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal and the Bear Trap Dam at the base of the canal in Lockport, Illinois. The canal serves as a shipping link between the Great Lakes Waterway and the Missisippi River and it carries Chicago's sewage to the Des Plaines River.  Construction on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal began in 1889 with the creation of the Municipal Sanitary District in response to fears that sewage pumped into the Chicago River and into Lake Michigan would contaminate the city's drinking water. The canal also served as a replacement for the narrower and shallower Illinois and Michigan Canal. Canal construction ran under the leadership of chief engineer Isham Randolph from September 3, 1892, known as "Shovel Day," until January 2, 1900, when water was first released into the canal.  During the construction process, engineers successfully and permanently reversed the flow of the Chicago River, enabling it to carry waste water away to the Mississippi River and eventually the Gulf of Mexico. Admiral George Dewey dedicated the canal on May 2, 1900. Additional construction extending the canal to Joliet ran from 1903-1907.  Photographs in this collection include images of the construction of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal and the Bear Trap Dam at the base of the canal in Lockport, Illinois. Keller began his working career as a school teacher and principal in Ava, Illinois, before becoming a lawyer and eventually working in the mining industry in the western United States and Mexico. Keller represented southern Illinois as a member of the Illinois State Senate (1913-1917) where he advocated for old-age pensions, woman’s suffrage, pure food and drug laws, and the eight-hour day. He served five terms in the United States House of Representatives (1931-1941). While in Congress, he was a member of the liberal bloc that supported New Deal legislation; introduced railroad retirement pension legislation; sought relief aid for Southern Illinois and envisioned Crab Orchard Lake project on a grand scale. He denounced organized religion and spoke in favor of equal rights for all all Americans, including women and African Americans. Although born in Massachusetts in 1833, Ingersoll eventually settled in Illinois, where he raised and led a cavalry regiment during the Civil War. Ms. Haskell and the school's Board of Trustees successfully fundraised for a new building and rebuilt the school in two years. The school's leadership made the decision to close the school in 1970 with the final class graduating in 1971. Lewis and Clark Community College completed the purchase of the Monticello College campus in 1972. At the monthly meeting of the Edinburgh Ladies’ Emancipation Society, held on Thursday, May 4, 1865, the following minute was adopted and recorded: It is with sentiments of profound grief and indignation that we have received the tidings of the death, by the hand of an assassin, of Abraham Lincoln, the noble President of the United States. We desire to record an expression of our sympathy with Mrs. Lincoln and the American people in the terrible calamity they have sustained. We feel as if a great personal loss had befallen ourselves, for we have long believed that the interests of the slave were safe in the hands of President Lincoln, and had fondly hoped that the cause we have so long had at heart was about to be brought to a triumphant issue by him who has thus suddenly been laid low. We the more deeply deplore this mysterious event from its occurring at a crisis of the nation’s history, when the wise, magnanimous, and merciful policy of President Lincoln was so peculiarly needed to readjust the sorely troubled elements of the republic, and to effect a reconciliation between the north and the south, with freedom for its basis. We can only Low before this awful dispensation, knowing that the Most High still ruleth in the kingdoms of men, and that He who raised up Abraham Lincoln can raise up other instruments for his work. We earnestly desire that the just and generous policy initiated by the late President may be pursued by his successor, and that the great republic may be again united in the bonds of peace, the plague spot of slavery (the true secret of its past weakness) forever wiped from its escutcheon. The common council met in its hall, the seventh ordinary meeting, in presence of the mayor, Antonio Agostino Brancaccio, the following councilmen being present: Rafaele d’Amato, Stapino Brancaccio, Silvestro Costabile, Giuliano Dedilectis, Luigi Dolce, Antonio d’Istria, Roberto Lullo, Agnello Lullo, Biondo Palomba, Antonio di Bartolomeo Palomba, Francesco Rajola, Vincenzo Scognamiglio, Francesco Maria Sorrentino, Stefano Sorrentino, Cavalier Andrea Vitelli, Michele Villano, making a quorum of seventeen out of the thirty members of the council, excluding the mayor and secretary. On motion of Biondo Palomba, in regular order, the council unanimously adopted the following address of condolence for the cruel death of Abraham Lincoln, President of the republic of the United States of America, and ordered it to be sent to the American Congress, through the United States consul in Naples: <blockquote> “He who, like Lincoln, constitutes himself the redeemer of humanity, has a right to the love and gratitude of all succeeding generations. Such a person is immortal, and the whole world mourns his death. If the grief is great when such a man dies a natural death, how much greater it must be when he is hastened to an untimely tomb by the hand of an assassin! Such a crime is scarcely comprehensible to a reasonable mind, and the being who commits it can scarcely be reckoned as a human being. “The policy advocated by Mr. Lincoln is victorious, and will endure forever His successor, inspired by the glorious example, can easily remove any obstacles that might arise to impede his progress. “The common council of Torre del Greco, in condoling with the American people for the assassination of Lincoln, is sure his plan will be carried out by Mr. Johnson.” </blockquote> The above is a correct copy of the minutes adopted by the council, after hearing it read; and signed by the mayor, as president, by Cavalier Andrea Vitelli, the oldest member present, and by me, the secretary. Heaton worked as a political cartoonist for several Chicago-based newspapers including the Chicago Daily Tribune (1885-1899) and the Inter-Ocean (1908-1914). While working for the Chicago Daily Tribune he created a series of weekly commentaries on the World's Columbian Exhibition held in Chicago in 1893. Heaton's political cartoons featured current events, frequently focusing on Chicago politics. Heaton took a break from cartoon work in 1899 to work as an actor and playwright before returning to the newspaper business in 1908.
