<text>Joseph Capps and his sons founded the Jacksonville Woolen Mills in 1839. They began making men’s pants in 1885 and were incorporated as J. Capps & Sons, Ltd. in 1886 as a manufacturer of textiles and men’s clothing. Capps came to Jacksonville from Kentucky where he had learned the trade of wool carding in Louisville. Most farmers had sheep and did carding of the wool and home manufacture of yarns for knitting and weaving. Capps carding plant eliminated this tedious and time consuming process from the farmer’s duties. By 1852 Capps produced and marketed a finished wool cloth and during the Civil War they produced blankets and overcoats.

Joseph died in 1872 and his sons, Stephen, William, Joseph, and Alfred took over the business. In 1885 there were very few men’s clothing stores, but the Capps started making pants and their salesman started selling pants to retail stores instead of cloth. By the 1890’s they were making suits.

Around the turn of the century they started making blankets for the Indians on western reservations which were then sold as Indian blankets. After advertising in Saturday Evening Post, they became popular with the general population but the company quit making blankets in 1915. In 1904 the old buildings were renovated and a new factory was built. The sale of cloth was down but the production and sales of men’s suits grew rapidly.

In the 1920’s the company started buying much of the wool they were using in their suits. During the Spanish-American War and World War I, Capps produced uniforms for the military. During World War II they made “pea coats” and the Navy awarded the company a “Certificate of Achievement”.

Robert Capps, the son of Alfred Capps, had planned to go to medical school but he joined the Army when America entered WWI. When he came back, he went to work for the family business as a salesman in Wisconsin and in 1944 he became the company president.

The original mill closed in 1927 and was torn down several years later. In the 1940’s Capps built a new one story factory. They started a business in 1937, Robert’s Tailoring Company, with Harry Capps as president, but it was unsuccessful and in 1942 it was liquidated.

The company celebrated its 125th anniversary in 1964, with Robert still acting as president. The company was the most long lived manufacturing company in Illinois. Robert died in 1968 and ten years later the company closed.</text>

In 1929, the couple purchased a several hundred acre farm in Wheaton, christened “Danada,” and thirteen years later established the Ada L. Rice Racing Stable. Ada and Dan Rice purchased an additional farm for horse breeding in Lexington, Kentucky, in 1947. Ada Rice’s thoroughbreds won at nearly every famous racetrack in the country, including in 1965, when Lucky Debonair won the Santa Anita Derby and then the 91st Kentucky Derby. Dan and Ada Rice were also major philanthropists for Chicago area museums and institutions, including the Shedd Aquarium, Chicago History Museum, and Benedictine University.

Images in this collection include photographs relating to Ada Rice, her thoroughbred horses, various horse races, and awards.</text>

Heaton's political cartoons featured current events, frequently focusing on Chicago politics.

Heaton took a break from cartoon work in 1899 to work as an actor and playwright before returning to the newspaper business in 1908. After Inter-Ocean's collapse in 1914, Heaton returned to the stage, acting on Broadway from 1920-1932.</text>

Evansville Inda Mar 1st 1864

Governor Yates of Illinois

Dear Sir

The annexed letter is a true coppy of one I have just received of Mrs A.A. Cheek whose Husband is in the Army and has been for over 2 years, the letter will speak for its self -

New Liberty Jasper County Ills 14" Feb 1864

Dear Brother & Sister,

I Seat my Self this Evening to tell you how we are getting along. we are all well but George has been very Sick, but is now better. Well Strawd we are doing very well as for Clothes and food are concerned but oh! he Hell we live in we hardly dare say our lives are our own. Today Charlotte returned from Town 3 Copper heads, Eli Todd his Wife & Nice Streached themselves across the Road, and because She did not give all the Road, and go out round them, he drew his Revolver and run her about 60 yards. She was on Horseback. Horatio & I was just behind. Coming up he drew his Coat and wanted to whip Horatio who stuck to the poor Cowardly Traitors and he soon Cooled down and we passed on.

A large number of Copperheads Drill here every Saturday. This week they Came out

and told publicly that they were Drilling to fight for the South. About 30 Miles above here there are 800 enlisted to fight for the South. They say as soon as they can get all they can. they are going through Ills to kill Union Men and burn Property and fight their way through to the South

I look every night for my House to be Burned down over my Head, it is a general opinion that they are going to do Some Mischief The are taking the very Same Steps that Kentucky did, I am afraid to let my children go out of my Sight. They call us all sorts of Names, and we are obliged to take it.

They have Shot 3 Union Men here close to us. Our Provost Marshall is a Copperhead and wont try to get us any help, and in the Name of God what are we to do, Strawd I don't want you to come and Sacrifice your life, you have too many little ones to look after, but will you use your influence in trying to get us Some help, we must have help soon, or be run over by these Out-Laws, and perhaps Murdered, for they are nothing but a Sett of Murderers. I expect you are ready to Say why don't the Union Men put a Stop to it, well, there is not enough to undertake it, and no Arms to do it We have written to Gov Yates time and again

but it appears that he will not believe or don't care. I Some times think he is a Copperhead too. Hardly any one will believe what we have to put up with only those who come and See and hear for themselves.

Was it not for my little Home I would not Say Here no longer than I Could get to Olney. You may think I am excited and Scared but I am not. what I have told you is all true, and I have not told one third I told Some of them yesterday, if our Property has to Burn there would be coals enough left to kindle theirs with

If I have to live this way 3 months longer, I don't know whether I can stand it or not. If we could just have some Soldiers Sent in here the Union Men are ready to give as long as they have anything to eat. They (Copperheads) are afraid of Soldiers. Now don't read this and throw it aside, but send us help if you can. My love to you all write Soon. I don't expect to close my eyes tonight to sleep. it is now 11 P.M.

Mrs A.A. Cheek

Governor Yates this is a Tax Payer of your State a Soldier in the 98 Ills Regiment and a True Union Man, who has left his family at the call you made to Serve his Country, and he now looks to you for protection to his family in his abscence. While he is in the field for general protection will you be good enough to give his Family the Protection which the Circumstances Surrounding them (as portrayed in the accompanying letters Shows) would Seem to demand. if it is in your Power So to do.

I vouch for the Truth of the statement in the forgoing letters.

For a Knowledge of My Self I refer you to Hon O.P. Morton Gov of Ind

                                                              " Loz. Noble A.G. " "

They have fought gallantly in the field & I believe the battalion at Spring - given unusual satisfaction you assured me, at the [Tremont?] a few weeks since, you thought it should be done - My next request, I fear you may consider obtrusive . I do not mean it so - My son Col Hoge of the 113th has been in the war from the beginning, has been several times specially, mentioned in the Official reports for gal

lantry, has acted frequently during the past year as Brigadier, has for some months been in command of the Post at Corinth, has been three times commended & has an unblemished record. I have been privileged to do some small good to the soldiers & I hope for the country. I ask most respectfully, that you would use your influence to have my son's name placed on the list to be sent into Congress for promotion. I know Mr Arnold would favor it, believe Senator Trumbull would, if you tell him what you know of my son He is a personal friend of mine & I believe would do what he could - I shall write him You will be pleased to hear that the nett money proceeds of our Fair will be $40.000 & other things included $45.000. Maj. Robb was here yesterday. Livermore & myself spent the whole day, in assisting him to make purchases at a cheap rate to be got at the Fair. They are getting up a Fair at Memphis for the Hospital. Major Robb is earnestly engaged in it. [We?] were happy to send him all the aid we could -

With profound respects

To the Govr of Ills

Honored Sir

I take the liberty of addressing a few lines too you hoping you will pardon the liberty that I take in intruding myself upon your Notice. The papers are full of speeches and appeals to the people, but I have not read a single line appealing too the Irish voters. Now Sir I ask you if it would not be worth while to try too bring them over too the good cause. I am an Irish Woman and the widow of an American and also the mother of his Seven Sons. Six of which Serve in the Union Army one in the 3rd Ill Cav, one in the 19th Ill on in the 20th Ill two in the 55th Ill one in the 106th Ill the Seventh a Boy of fifteen years remains at home with me, but I don't know for how long

two of his brothers has been home on furlough. they both belong to Shermans 15th A.C. one was wounded on the 28th of July and has gone back to his Regt. the other was wounded Augt 3rd and was not as fortunate as his Brother. he has been severely wounded and is now in the Genl Hospital at Chicago owing the hardships he has suffered coming home his wound was worse then when he left the front. I would not trouble you by addressing you if the Soldiers had been paid. believe me Sir that I have never availed myself of the provision made for mothers of Soldiers I dont belong to that class that suffer themselves too be placed upon the paupers list for sake of getting a little money Any Boy thinks it is his duty to go as we all fear his Brother will not be able to take part in the battles that are to be fought before Sherman brings his Army

by way of the Atlantic

You cannot wonder then that my heart and Soul is in the Cause. where all that I have and all that loves me are battling in the Union Cause. being a Woman I am not at liberty to take up a musket and follow the loved ones to the field. But without the least vanity I believe I can be of benefit in the coming Struggle. that is as far as my county men are concerned I believe if I could travel and address my County men. I could prove to them that it would be to their benefit as well as to their Honor to vote for Mr Lincoln you know better than I whether you will Succeed without the Irish votes. or a part of them I will assure your Sir, that a greater part of the Irishmen have the capacity of appreciating the many priveliges they enjoy in America which is denied them in their own land. All I ask

the recompense I ask is a pass over the roads. You may think this request is absurd "and asks can anything good come out of Nazereth" I must answer as "Franklin did" when he was called upon to [compose?] he wrote "come and see" I have waited to this late day before I could dare to address you.

Pardon me if you are not the proper person to address. I send this by hand you can return it to my messenger which will wait for the answer if you do not see fit to grant my request. if You do grant it this is my address Mistress Ann Warden, Lemonte, Cook Co. Ills Direct care of Mr George Hall esqr Notary Public

She proposes to canvass the State & obtain--as she is sure she can--a large number of vote from her countrymen and want Govr. to furnish her passes over the Rail Roads.
