Where he can have a change of diet which will in all probability save his life. He has been sick since the 1st of July So if anything can be done it must be done speedily.

has been having a run of fever of nine day when the fever left him direar sett in. He applied for a leave of absence to come home and recruit. This has been refused him But has the promise of being sent to Lookout Montain the officers hospital. Now if they do not Succeed in having him removed he too must die.

What I wish of you is if you have any influence to try and have the commanding officer grant him permission to come home. Where he can have a change of diet which will in all probability save his life. He has been sick since the 1st of July So if anything can be done it must be done speedily.

Governor of Illinois

Dear Sir

I take the liberty to write you concerning my Dear Brother Silas A. Simonton, of the 42nd Ill Vol, But who is now a paroled Prisoner at Annapolis MD. I have two brothers in the Army, who have fought bravely and faithfully for more than a year and half, and at the Battle of Murfreesboro this one (of whom I speak) was wounded and taken prisoner was in the hands of the Rebels a month and then paroled and sent to Annapolis MD.

He has never since his enlistment expressed any willingness to come come but his whole heart and soul have been in the work of fighting for his country. And in all his writings, he

has frequently expressed a determination to fight, if need be seven years as our Forefathers fought.

But since he has been a Paroled Prisoner He has an earnest desire to come Home - for a while at least - that he may get recruited up and get the rest and strength he so much needs and also to see his Aged Father & Mother and myself his sister who am an Invalid and almost helpless and whom he has not seen for most 6 years

We know not what better to do than to appeal to you, knowing that you have the power to grant him a furlough or permit to come home (as you have done so by others) untill exchanged or ordered to return again to his Reg't.

He is suffering from his wound, is getting disheartened, has no money not having received any pay for

6 months, and we think it right and just under the circumstances for him to come home for a few weeks, that he may regain the strength needed for him to rejoin his Regt and to engage anew in the Glorious work for which he is willing to give his life. Now will you not Dear Sir do something for him? A soldier needs care, sympathy, and tender nursing, and and where, O where I ask can he get it so well as among his friends and in the bosom of his home? Please Dear Sir let us know immediately what can be done for him, and if you think best you can send a furlough right to him.

Silas A. Simonton

12th Company 4th Battalion

Or to myself his sister and you will greatly oblige

Respectfully yours

Mrs. F. M. Berry

Founded by Captain Benjamin Godfrey to provide education for women, the school offered two years of classes for attendees based on the idea that “if you educate a man you educate an individual; educate a woman and you educate a whole family.”

Godfrey selected Reverend Theron Baldwin to serve as the first head of the Monticello Female Seminary. In 1867 Harriet Haskell became principal, a position she held until her death in 1907.

On November 4, 1888, a fire broke out in the building and consumed the entire structure. Ms. Haskell and the school's Board of Trustees successfully fundraised for a new building and rebuilt the school in two years.

The school's leadership made the decision to close the school in 1970 with the final class graduating in 1971. Lewis and Clark Community College completed the purchase of the Monticello College campus in 1972.

The finding aid for the Monticello College (Godfrey, IL) Records at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library may be found at https://illinois.as.atlas-sys.com/repositories/2/resources/545.

The finding aid for the photographic Monticello College Collection at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum may be found at https://illinois.as.atlas-sys.com/repositories/3/resources/4702.

</text>

Gov. Yates

Sir

Presuming much upon your kindness to the soldier, I have ventured to address you upon a subject which I consider but Justice.

My husband enlisted in the service of the United States, in Illinois Winnebago Co two years ago this coming August. By enlisting he lost nearly three hundred dollars by being obliged to sell stock &c at reduced prices, which also reduced my means of support to a very limited allowance. but he my husband was faithfully promised that his family should be cared for by those in authority. I wished to come to Ohio to live among my friends during my husband's absence and was told that would not make the least difference. Well to cut the matter short I have never received one cent. I made

application but it did no good my husband has no been in hard service ever since he entered but the Army and is now wounded lying in the hospital at New Albany Ind where I would go to him if I had the means but I am in hopes he will be furloughed I pray God he may.

Now my dear sir I would never have written this to you if I were a healthy woman and able to support myself and family I have to children now. I lost a little boy about a month ago. I am sick a great deal tis true I get my husband's wages but I ask you if you could support a family of 4 on thirteen dollars a month. I could get along well enough were it not for sickness. I have not meant to tell you a pitiful tale to excite your pity but I have merely stated the plain truth and ask you that justice may be done me.

I have five brothers in the army beside

numberless other relatives and no one of us have ever made application for relief but me and I have never received any I do not think I shall starve if I do not get anything for I have planted a patch of potatoes and sugar cane and if I am able to take care of them I shall have that much at any rate and I am also reviewing my studies intending to teach again if my health will allow me.

Hoping to hear from you soon.

Gov. Yates

I remain your Obt Serv't
