It is with great reluctance I assure you that I take the Liberty of addressing you on the present occasion. Being personaly unknown to you I Beg you will please excuse the liberty I am about to take, the object of my addressing you is with Regard to my Husband who is in the Army and he is at the present time very Sick and he is not taken any care of, and he is not in any Hospital, and unless there is something done for him he will not live long, he has nothing to eat but crackes and he cannot eat them, and he is so very week he cannot walk, his fellow Soldiers say that him and Several others in his Regiment will soon die if they are not better attended to than they have been. My Husband is not by any means a healthy man, he has been in this War almost all of the time, he was an Officer in the first 3 months Service, and he served his time out and he enlisted again and was elected an Officer in another Regiment, and he was in it 9 months and his Ill health compeled him to resign his commission, and his health became some better for awhile, and there was another company going from here and the Captain persuaded him to go again promising him an Office, and telling him that if he would go that he would be shure of an Office as he was not able for duty as a private, he then enlisted and was Sworn in and his captain would not let him have the Office, and he went as a private, his Captain Never liked him and he has got him as a private he is very unkind to him and he is very Sick and I think from what my Acquantences write home he cannot live long, unless he

is removed to some hospital where he can be taken care of. And I Beg you will have something done for him. I would not have written to you but I thought you was a kind hearted man and would not wish any person to die for want of luxuries to sustain life and O beg you will please do something for my poor distresed Husband, and want you to have him Discharged, and if you will not do that please to let him have a furlough to come home so that I can attend to him, and try to Save his life, and if you will not comply with these requests, please have him removed to some of our Northern Hospitals, for unless there is Something done for him he will die and I would be very lonely and desolate indeed, there has a great many died out of his Regiment and the officers does not pay Scarcely any attention to thier men. My Husbands Name is John Wesley Pullen and he is in the 87th Illinois Infantry, Co. B. and he is at Vicksburg or Warrinton, close to Vicksburg, you will please comply with my requsts and please write and tell me if you will do any thing for him or not I hope you will. you will please keep this a Secret and not say anything about me writing to you, but I beg you do Some thing for him, and please write to me and tell me if you will not do something for him. <text>
Honorable Richard Yates

Governor of Illinois

It cannot have escaped your accurate observation that multitudes of our selfsacrificing soldiers rescued from the battlefield are dying monthly in our military hospitals.

After carefully looking at the facts we are overwhelmed by the conviction that a large percentage of these sick could be restored to health, to their friends & to the army, if the sick & wounded who are not too far reduced to permit them to make the journey, were sent from the malicious districts of the south to their friends, or northern hospitals.

This is a sufficient reason

why the parents of our own Illinois troops should plead, as Wisconsin has already successfully done, for the establishment of an extension state Hospital in southern Illinois.

We see that it is more economical also to carry the sick man to his food in a healthful climate rich with abundant harvests than to ship his food to him. Fewer vessels would be needed; fewer men employed hence a great gain in time & money.

Another weighty reason for this transfer of our enfeebled soldiers is found in the satisfaction it would give to the men themselves & to their parents & friends. "Let me die at home" is a natural & universal wish. Shall we trifle with this wish in those who have willingly offered themselves for their country?

Or shall we refuse the sick, their only boon they ask, to be in the heart of their family, or near their homes; since all the comforts of the sick room can be so much more easily obtained at the north, with the best of nursing & the most healthful air.

A state hospital in Illinois, for such as have not homes to which they would prefer to be sent, that would accommodate our sick we are confident would save the lives of hundreds; & every soldier thus saved, is dear to a circle of friends, & would strengthen our army by making him a strong veteran for the ranks & a bond of union, drawing his whole circle of friends nearer to our government that shows such parental care of its warriors.

When an officer becomes much debilitated he is granted leave of ab-

sence & after a brief tarry at home he usually returns strong & well for duty.

Why should we deny to the private soldier that which so benefits his superior? Is it objected, the soldier will never return? Let the multitude that are now returning after a few weeks or months at home be an answer to this objection.

Some worthless men would not return; but those who love their country, on whom dependence could be placed in the hour of danger & of battle will return. Gratitude for kind care of them will strengthen their love of country: And shall the good be sacrificed in unhealthy climates because the coward will meanly bide himself at home?

Over

Nothing will give our administration a stronger hold on the affections of all voters than this benevolent care of their sons & brothers.

As a most wise strategic movement, a policy for strengthening its hand, let the parents of the country know that their sick sons may go north to be nursed & one of the strongest obstacles to the new call for 300,000 men would be removed.

If it be possible to grand this request for Illinois soldiers the blessing of thousand will come upon you & your petitioner will [illegible] for the same.

I have examined this letter and necessary I find it [illegible] I would support that an application be made for a Hospital [illegible] [illegible] in southern Ills [Maybe] at Tamaroa, a good place good building now vacant.

Dear Sir

I have been deeply
bereaved in the death of my son
R McKee Davis who was mortally
wounded while defending the honored
old Flag on the 22d of May before
the entrenchments at Vicksburg.

"He had followed the Flag to the
fortifications of the enemy, fighting
bravely, when by a murderous fire from
the foe, with explosive balls, he was
shockingly wounded in the left thigh
above the knee" says his chaplain.

"I was near him" continues the chaplain, and witnessed his cool, calm
courage - saw him about to plant the
flag on the fortifications as he fell -
The flag was planted and his eye
beamed with [patriotic?] triumph as
he beheld it wave from the ramparts

of the foe. I helped to bind up
his wound - left him upon the
stretcher and saw him conveyed
from the field." "Tell my mother"
said he "I die in the faith and hope
of the christian - tell my young wife
to live near then Savior and bring up
our child in the fear of God so that
we may meet in heaven."

Pardon me dear sir for going
into such particulars. My chief
desire now is to get his remains
when the weather gets cooler and
have them near us.

I write to you believing that
you have much benevolence - to ask
if you could assist me in this dearly
cherished object. I cannot raise
all the means as I am in straitened
circumstances pecuniarely.

If you or any of the old
friends of my late husband
Samuel H. Davis a patriot and

matter I should be very greatly

Respected Sir:

Though I never wrote a letter to a Gov, in my life, yet pardon me for this once, and listen to my plea.

I request your influence and assistance in getting a furlough or discharge for a sick son -

He enlisted in the U. S. Service two years ago last August, in Co. H. 33 Reg. Ill Vol being then (16 1/2) sixteen and a half years old. He has been in active service nearly all the time since. A year ago last Spring marched from Trenton Mo. to Batesville Ark. and in July performed a forced march to Helena on quarter rations & the last sixty miles with

only one meal. Last winter he spent the nearly all his time marching through Missouri - most of the time on half rations - wore out his shoes & went through snow 8 or 10 inches deep barefoot or nearly so.

Early last spring he was sent to Vicksburg, after spending some five or six weeks in the Ditches, he performed the march & fought the battles from Grand Gulf to Jackson, then back to the rear of Vicksburg, there he toiled till Vicksburg surrendered. For three months before that event he was sick with ague & chronic diarrhea When he was so weak he could not stand up an hour, he would get a reclining position & act as sharp shooter. The day of the charge along the line (22 of May) he fired two hundred rounds in this way.

This son (Henry Steele) has been in Hospital since July fourth, Part of the time in Vicksburg the rest of the time in

General Hospital Benton Barracks Ward D. When he first came up to St. Louis he could walk around, but he has gradually run down till he can not sit up but a little while at a time. We have some hope of his recovery if we could get him home, but non if he stays there. I have visited him there & know he has every comfort. I do not urge the change because he suffers for comforts. I don't. They are kind to our sick soldiers. But he has been sick so long, he is childish, and is anxious to come home, therefore I urge; that the change might do him good. The Surgeon in charge told me if he could have his way about it he would send all with that disease home.

I have one more favor to ask of your Excellency if you should aid me in getting our boy home can you send me a pass to go to bring him home, He is too weak to come alone.

Respectfully Yours,

Mrs. E. M. Steele

His wife has recently died leaving a babe eight months old and a [boy?] of two years in destitution. Gov Yates do have compassion upon these dear children and save to them their remaining parent. Their mother has been sacrificed! is it not enough. Circumstances similar may often be present to your sympathy and consideration but that makes this call

I do not wish to trespass on your time dear Sir in giving details, unless required by you. Suffice it to say, I am the only sister of D. W. Lester, residing a few miles out of Carlyle from which place I can give you references, also from Greensville in this State, also St. Luis. Allow me sir to enclose a letter written to me by the Postmaster Stationage at Aviston where Mrs. Lester Died. I have the children with me, and if I thought their father could fight and live to fight again, I would not ask for him until this unholy rebellion is ended; his death will do his country no good, his life will protect his children. I have not consulted with my brother in relation to this matter, indeed I have not heard from him since Feb. I have reason to fear he is sick. With great

You may be surprised at a stranger's addressing you, but my son, who was formerly employed in Bloomington, Ill, left a lucrative situation to enter the army one year ago. His employer was named Haines, a prominent grocer in B. He is Corporal in the Fifth Ill Cavalry Company Capt Withers, now at Helena, Arkansas. By his enlisting in that State, I am fully aware that I am entitled to no bounty or assistance from Ill. I have been a widow for a number of years and have supported myself by my needle; and I ask if it is in your power, if you see the justice of the case, if you will let me know if I could through your assistance recieve any benefit from your State. Will you be so kind as to answer, and address Mrs Moses C. Grant, Dedham, Mass. My other son is in the navy, and I have
