Victoria, Knox Co. Ills Feby 1864

To his excellency, Governor Yates

Dear Sir

with pleasure I communicate [hoping?] that asking a favor from some higher state authority it may be granted as I have consulted a great many without receiving any assurance that my efforts would meet with success. you probably remember my husband Dr. Lambert from among [many?] of your honest supporters who died 2 years ago. yes he possessed the talent but not the health to back it and adored the stripes and stars also and taught his sons to reverence and help protect the same. my oldest son volunteered 2 years next July and in a [illegible] [Douchdor?] time but the business I wish to call your attention [ex?chting?] to my third son who volunteered last week his age was 15 years a very patriotice boy and I was willing to have him sacrifice upon his country alter to help perpetuate freedom and the union. Mr. Stanley, recruiting from the 9 cavaly arrived here sometime ago with special orders from Col Oakes to volunteer recruits for 9 cavalry and no other also with orders to report to Capt Howell at altona who was to furnish the said Stanley facilities for so doing. my son volunteered with Mr Stanley with some others and he reported with them to Capt Howell who refused to furnish him facilities according to agreement but went to Chicago with Mr Stanley's recruits, and they all being young boy were easily persuaded and Capt Howell held out and offered them the Cook Co bounty, which he had no regret to do with recruits from other counties and thereby Seduced the boys to go into his

regiment which is the 89th and also represented Said regt to be mounted Infantry and are now on the road to that regt expecting it will be mounted but it is not and I dont expect will be. the boys would not have volunteered except to go in a cavalry regt or mounted Infantry and my boy will not be able to stand such hard service as he will undoubtedly be subjected to. I think and so does every one concerned that Capt Howell should be seen to and the propper vengence of the law meeted out to him for Enlisting under false pretenses and positively disobeying his order from Col Oakes concerning recruiting. the boy will be terribly disappointed when he arrives at regt and finds it Infantry and if it is possible to secure a transfer to the ninth Cavalry or to the 89 Regt. I want to know he has drawn his clotheing and bounty and also the Cook Co bounty but I am willing to spend the last cent I have to put him where he can be suited. I do sincerely hope that it will be enquired into for if ever a man deserved punishment Cap Howell does and the people about will not be satisfied until the same is done but that which concerns me the most in the transfer of my son which I do sincerely hope may be affected but I dont think it can through the Capt above mentioned I hope you will condescend to Inform me what can be done. and thereby greatly oblige me. I am glad to have the honor of addressing you

Your &c, Nancy Lambert

Lambert Mary Mrs, Victoria Knox County, Febry 1864

She is the wife of the late Dr Lambert. has two sons one in the army - her youngest volenteered a few weeks ago in the 9th Cavalry. went to Chicago and by faulse statements & large bounty was enduced to go in 89th Regt. Wishes the Governor to have him transferred to a Cavalry Regt - think the officer should be punished for violating instructions

Gov: of Illinois

Dear Sir I am just from Washington, where I was sent by the City of Rock Island to advocate the establishment of a Material Armory at Rock Island.

At Washington, on the 23rd, I presented the enclosed papers to the Sec: of War, S.P. Chase. Sec: of the Treasury, is my personal friend who made his endorsement in the papers, marked No 1.

I was accompanied to the Sec: of War's Office by officers of the army, my old friends, former companions. He said he would give me a commission, if it was in his power, to offer me one suitable to my position; and after consultation, recommended

me to apply to you for the command of one of the new Regiments to be raised in Illinois, or for a vacancy, if one should occur, in one already raised.

My friends & relative, Hon O. H. Browning gave me the enclosed letter to you.

I would have tried to have entered the service sooner, but for the calamity of our Banks which involved me in troubles that I am just getting retired from

I go to Rock Island to day, where I will hope to have an early [answer?].

I will visit you at Springfield, if you suggest it.

I am, very respectfully Your Obt. Svt. N.B. Buford
