House of Representatives Description An account of the resource The Buckmaster-Curran Collection features early Illinois families descended from Colonel John Durkee of Norwich, Connecticut, who fought in the Revolutionary War. His daughter Anna Durkee first married Dr. Dominic Tauzin, with whom she had a daughter, Mary Harriott Tauzin. Mary Tauzin married Daniel Bartling, a lieutenant in the War of 1812. Mary died in 1809 and Anna was responsible for the care of her two grandchildren, Henry and Harriet. In 1817 she, along with the children, came to Illinois and settled in Madison County. In 1832 Harriet Bartling married Nathaniel Buckmaster, a brick maker by trade, who had first come to Illinois in 1817. He served as a state representative in 1820-1822, and again, 1834-1836. He was elected Madison County sheriff in 1821 and served several consecutive terms. He was appointed Colonel in the Illinois militia in 1828 and commanded a battalion in the Black Hawk War. He was postmaster at Alton, 1838-1841 and warden at the Illinois State Penitentiary, 1842-1846. Buckmaster owned property in Madison County and operated the Madison County Ferry across the Mississippi. Nathaniel and Harriet Buckmasters’s daughter, Catherine Buckmaster married Isaac Bush Curran, Sr.. Curran was born in Ithaca, New York, and worked as a jeweler when he came to Illinois in 1840. He was active in Democratic politics and was appointed Pension Agent for Illinois by President Buchanan from 1853-1858. He was private secretary and chief of staff for Governor Joel Matteson. Catherine and Isaac had two sons, Isaac B. She attended elementary school in Mississippi (1916-1922) and high school and junior college in Chicago after her family moved to Illinois in 1923. She received her diploma from Provident Hospital School of Nursing in 1933 and degrees in Public Health Nursing from Loyola University (B.S. 1942) and in Administration and Supervision from the University of Chicago (M.S., 1954). Ms. Durham attended Tuskegee Nurse-Midwifery School in Alabama and did graduate coursework at Illinois Teachers College (1958-1965) and Roosevelt University (1965). Her forty-five year professional career included positions as staff and public health nurse, nursing school teacher/supervisor, consultant in maternal and child health and in personal and public service occupations, elementary/adult education teacher and librarian. She worked at such private and public organizations as nurse midwifery schools, Chicago Department of Health, U.S. Children’s Bureau, National League for Nursing, Illinois State Board of Vocational Education and Rehabilitation and the East Central Curriculum Management Center. Ms. Durham retired from the Illinois Office of Education in June 1978. She worked briefly on an educational research project at Eastern Illinois University, July 1978-June 1979. She was active in several community and religious organizations including: Senior Learners Program, Sangamon State University, American Nurses Association, NAACP, Springfield Urban League, Gray Panthers, Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation, and Project Area Agency on Aging. The name of Abraham Lincoln embodied, in our estimation, one of the greatest causes with which heart can be inspired, and it is just at the moment when that cause is crowned with victory, after a cruel struggle, that he to whom the triumph is mainly due, perishes, the victim of an unaccountable fanaticism. Only this was wanting to complete the horrors of slavery, the consecration of victory, and the glory of the defender of liberty. Madam, we do not seek to console you with the idea of the glory henceforth attached to the name of your husband, whom future ages will rank, as we do now, among the benefactors of the human race. But directing your attention, as well as our own, to something higher, let us adore the mysterious will of God who has deigned to make of Abraham Lincoln one of those powerful workers that he employs in the accomplishment of his designs, and who has allowed him to be taken away from this world after the gloom and labor of the combat. We associate ourselves from the bottom of the heart in your grief, which is not only a national mourning but extends throughout humanity. We pray God to console you as He alone can do, and show you, by faith, him whom we mourn in that eternal glory of the kingdom of Heaven, where God gathers all his children, illustrious or obscure, around Jesus Christ, who gave his life to save the world. We pray that the indignation excited by the horrible act may not change the thoughts of charity which ought to crown the work of emancipation. May God now finish that work, and confer his benedictions on the people of the United States, who have been so cruelly tried, and on you, madam, whose grief we share, and on the many thousand souls who have each borne their tribute of suffering in this violent intestine commotion of the country. Peithmann worked at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale beginning in 1931 as the manager of the university farm. Peithmann explored Native American occupation sites in southern Illinois leading to the Southern Illinois University Museum curator placing Peithmann in charge of the organization's Native American collections in 1949. His career focused on studying archaeology remains from pre-historic Native Americans in southern Illinois. Peithmann discovered the Modoc Rock Shelter in 1951 containing skeletons over 11,000 years old. Peithmann also worked with the Seminole Indians in Florida, helping them create a memorial to Osceola.
