McCutcheon worked as a political cartoonist for Chicago newspapers including the Chicago Record (1889-1903) and the Chicago Tribune (1903-1946). McCutcheon created a series of cartoons based on Midwestern American life called Bird Town while he worked for the Chicago Record which he continued after moving to the Chicago Tribune. The ACI grew out of the merger of the Springfield Chamber of Commerce, Springfield Manufacturers and Employers Association, and the Springfield Industrial Development Commission. During the 1950s, the association mainly focused on improving the city sewer system, completed plans for the creation of three industrial parks, and worked for a comprehensive zoning plan. However, with the growth of the Springfield area in the 1960s, the local economy became a concern of the entire Springfield metropolitan area, not just the city of Springfield, so the ACI changed its name to the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce in December 1970. The new Chamber of Commerce continued the ACI’s efforts to promote and improve the Springfield community in the 1970s, focusing primarily on developing the city’s convention and tourism trade. The collection includes photographs relating to Springfield’s first Business-Education (B-E) Day on October 10, 1952, which was sponsored by the Springfield Association of Commerce and Industry. One-hundred public and parochial teachers from city and county schools participated in the program, visiting local industries, such as Springfield Works. This collection also has photographs from Springfield’s 1957 “Capitennial” celebration and other events sponsored by the ACI, ranging from the 1920s to the 1960s. The collection also includes images of Dollar Day in downtown Springfield, the annual Plae Dae picnic, Springfield Day festivities at the Illinois State Fair, and Springfield's Capitennial celebration. She attended elementary school in Mississippi (1916-1922) and high school and junior college in Chicago after her family moved to Illinois in 1923. She received her diploma from Provident Hospital School of Nursing in 1933 and degrees in Public Health Nursing from Loyola University (B.S. 1942) and in Administration and Supervision from the University of Chicago (M.S., 1954). Ms. Durham attended Tuskegee Nurse-Midwifery School in Alabama and did graduate coursework at Illinois Teachers College (1958-1965) and Roosevelt University (1965). Her forty-five year professional career included positions as staff and public health nurse, nursing school teacher/supervisor, consultant in maternal and child health and in personal and public service occupations, elementary/adult education teacher and librarian. She worked at such private and public organizations as nurse midwifery schools, Chicago Department of Health, U.S. Children’s Bureau, National League for Nursing, Illinois State Board of Vocational Education and Rehabilitation and the East Central Curriculum Management Center. Ms. Durham retired from the Illinois Office of Education in June 1978. She worked briefly on an educational research project at Eastern Illinois University, July 1978-June 1979. She was active in several community and religious organizations including: Senior Learners Program, Sangamon State University, American Nurses Association, NAACP, Springfield Urban League, Gray Panthers, Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation, and Project Area Agency on Aging. Divorced with no children, Durham died March 22, 1995. Photographs in this collection include images of African American nurses at work, family photographs, and portraits.
