Hon. Richard Yates, Governor of Illinois

Sir: -

I write to inquire if you have disposed of a commission to any one as sutler of the volunteer regiment to be located at the fair ground at Peoria. If not I would ask you to take into consideration the conferring of said commission upon your humble servant. I can, if it is necessary, give you good references in this city and also refer you back to the days when I was a boy and resided in Jacksonville to find out who your correspondent is. I am not altogether certain that you are the proper officer to apply to but thought that as you are the only one of the state officers I ever was acquainted with that I would apply to you and get you to intersede for me
