Description
Helene Elizabeth Black (third from the left) taking a team picture with her basketball teammates. They comprised "the first girls' Basketball team in the city of Chicago University School for girls," spring, 1900. Helene was the daughter of John Charles Black, a Union Army Lieutenant Colonel and Brevet-Brigadier General during the American Civil War, who later became a U.S. Congressman of Illinois, and a U.S. District Attorney at Chicago.
