Governor Yates

Dear Sir

Permit me to introduce to you Mr James Beach a highly valued friend, and member of my church, Second Lieutenant in in Capt Ellets Comy of the 59, Ill. Reg, and severely wounded in the battle of Pea Ridge.

I take this opportunity also of heartily thanking you for your spirited letter to Lincoln, and for the decided influence you have every exerted in your public life life in favor of justice to the oppressed. The moral and intellectual forces of the north are rapidly ranging on the side of freedom.

Do not all eyes look one way - all hands point in the same direction:

With high esteem I remain your sincere friend

C.B. Barton.
