Statement on Archival Description and Inclusive Research Environments
We recognize that libraries and archives, including Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, are not neutral spaces. ALPLM staff makes every attempt to describe research materials in a manner that is respectful to all researchers but also to the historical figures, organizations, and communities that created or are represented in the collections we manage.

Some material in collections may contain offensive imagery or language. In the interest of historical context and integrity, we are not removing these images or words from archival works. As we work to make collections available or maintain legacy collections we will provide a note about harmful content in the collection description.

Please contact us if you encounter problematic description by notifying reading room staff or by contacting Audiovisual Curator, Megan Klintworth (megan.klintworth@illinois.gov) or Manuscripts Curator, Christopher Schnell (christopher.schnell@illinois.gov). Staff will review the description and update it in a way that balances the preservation of original context with an awareness of the effect of language on our users. Revisions may include providing additional context and/or replacing problematic terminology. We welcome your feedback.
