Monmouth Ills
Augt 20th 1862.
To his Excellency
Richd Yates Governor of Ills
Springfield Ills
Governor
I enclose you herewith a letter from my Father, Jacob H. Hold, who desires to do something for his Country and at the same time make a little for himself.
He is quite well informed in Military matters and well qualified to fill with credit to himself and his Country any position Civil or Military which you may be pleased to give him. Has been Deputy Collector of Customs for the District of Champlain N.Y. represented his County (Clinton) in the General Assembly of the State of New York and for the last thirty years has been much in public life, always performing his public services with perfect satisfaction to his constituency - Should it be perfectly compatible with your sense of justice and propriety I Should be pleased to have my Father nominated for Collector of the Internal Revenue for this Congressional District and also placed in command of the Militia about to be drafted
and I can assure you, that as Collector or Military Commander, he will perform the duties devolving upon him with entire satisfaction to your Excellency, the government and the people of this District, and I shall feel myself under renewed obligations to you for any kindness you may be pleased to show him and both will ever strive to prove ourselves worthy your kind consideration - With sentiments of high esteem
I have the honor to be
Very Respectfully,
Your Obd't Servt
